Can't beleive my luck over the last few days, first the starter, then some idiot wrote off my Micra, now clutch slipping on Mav!! Guys what can I be expecting to pay for a new clutch fitted ? and is it a specialist job, meaning will it have to be a 4x4 specialist?
Heres hoping but can only see this going one way!
Cheers Rich

panic ye not. its not that bad.

id say around £150 for a clutch KIT, thats three parts, but buy a thrust bearing too (i think) as they are only about £8.

Labour, approx 4 hours, lets put it this way, i paid £150 labour.

I rang the garage, a proper garage, and all i said was "ford maverick, clutch fitting" and he said "£150"

no pissing about, no intakes of breath, no "ill have to have a look" just a proper garage that knows what they are doing is all you need.

clutch can be done in a day, my preferred method is engine out, if you have the benefit of a hoist then some say you can slide the box back just far enough to change it without dropping the torsion bars and x member, clutch bits around £120.00 Rick

Not planning on doing it myself Rick, dont have the know how or tools or space..lol. Will do a bit of ringing around tomorrow and report back, there are a couple of good 4x4 places around here but some say very pricey, but you never know i suppose!!
Cheers Rich..

well, dont forget, YOU can choose to be picky. as I said, I paid £150 labour. I seriously would not want to pay more than that...

Ok Clivvy will do! Seriously dont wanna say goodbye to another one but may have to if I cant get the price right as need a car asap! :nenau

I know that the life of the original clutch depends of lots of things, but not limited to...

Style of driving slipping the clutch, riding the clutch.
Long distance driving vs short journeys in town.
What you are towing, and how often.
Off roading, low mileage but heavy on the clutch.
Pulling up tree stumps etc

So what mileage does the original clutch give?
I say original, as we know there are a few after market clutches that fail.

Mine 94 k still ok, short distance urban driving, no off roading, limited towing of 2 tonne boat over long distances.

Best regards,

Rustic

£150 labour to change a clutch is very very cheap.I never put any of my cars in garage for work but at that price wouldnt think twice.Just looked on google the average garage rate is £83 per hour:eek:

My Mav has now 119k on it but dont know if it has had a clutch, but does have the dodgy pedal syndrome! Blocked off extra damper pipe but didn't fix pedal height! Has been used for towing horse box in past, that owner had, had it since it had 15k on it. Been driving it today and was slipping but as soon as i lift pedal with my toe it stops slipping!! Now might be clutching at straws here but could this possibly be the problem as clutch pedal sits right down but would that be enough to apply slight pressure on slave to make clutch slip? Did I see somewhere a thread that stated milners were now doing the bush for clutch pedal?
Heres hoping Rich..

hmm...worth thinking about before fitting a clutch ALTHOUGH mine was going at around 124k miles, and i am fairly sure it was the original clutch.

If your pedal is so low, something isnt right. Although the spring and bushes go on these, leading to a clutch pedal not returning on its own, it should always return aided or unaided, so if yours is so low, you need to check the clutch fluid, breather pipe, clutch return spring and all that stuff first. Even if the clutch is slipping, the pedal should always return one way or another, so id sort that first.

Cheers Clivvy but can you buy the spring and bush? Not using any fluid or anything and damper pipe been blocked off. But would it create enough pressure to push slave a little to slip clutch?

A friend had a problem a while ago, slipping clutch was down to a stuck non return valve in master cylinder.
Local garage changed the clutch, no change, local diy mechanic sorted it.

Check the slave cylinder, has it retracted, in my friends case it stayed fully out but was OK after a few hours.

my clutch was slipping a few weeks ago :nenau so i phoned NISSAN just for quote .........wait for it...............£1018 all in :eek:

i took a choking fit and fell off my chair :lol

so i went round to landrover garage .....he had a look and gave it a little ajustment:thumbs.....but he did say i would need a new one soon :(

SO ANY ONE LOOKING FOR A HOMER TO DO MY CLUTCH GIVE ME A SHOUT !!! :augie

could be, and as Kitchenman says, could be the master cylinder non return valve. the spring and bush i think you can get from a motor factors, if not, from CNCfabs I expect, although you can take a look yourself to see if the spring is broken/bent out of shape and the bush is broken and take it from there.

If you do not mind a journey down here, Swifty will do it for £150.00 you supply the parts, he has done a fair few, all for members on here, Rick

Had a few quotes today, a 4x4 place near me will do it for £175 labour, I supply clutch. Clutch clinic £395 all in and various garages quoting between £420-£675!! So looks like should it still be slipping when I fix the pedal the 4x4 place will get my vote!!

go see rick n swifty they did mine its like watching ballet as they lift the engine out and replace the clutch they did mine a while back

I definately would go and see Rick and Swifty if it was a bit closer, as you can't beat knowledge!! Wife has been using it today and says it hasn't slipped, but she said that on saturday and was terrible when I jumped in it to nip out on Saturday.
