Well ive been using my Terrano everyday since I removed the damper pipe with no issues other than a high biting point, So I adjusted the pedal and it got a little better until yesterday. I had the day off work and was taking the kids out and low and behold it started to slip and bite point is right at the top of the pedal, And I mean within a couple of cm's, So I got under and pulled the rubber boot away from the release arm and there is quite a lot of metal filings floating around in there so I think its bite the bullet time and order a new clutch. So after reading through Banshee's thread I got myself the same borg and beck clutch kit ordered for £140.00 and im going to attempt it Saturday. Now after reading a few threads on the upgrade I saw that a few people mentioned a lip of on the flywheel after removing the old clutch, So I took the flywheel off my spare engine and low and behold I can see the offending lip so after work I decided to remove it and give the new clutch a good starting chance. Pics say a thousand words...

I decided to steal the turntable from our spare surface grinder and after making up a nice 3 phase extension lead set about grinding the flywheel, Ive only took a few thou off but its now nice and flat and the finish is just right.

On my bench all done...

I will take some more pics as work progresses and hopefully on Saturday all will be revealed. :thumbs

You have machining facilities to skim a flywheel? respect, Rick

Cheers Rick, Not much in our place we cant do its an old school engineering shop oil on the floor and jam packed with everything to do with engines you could think of just original british engineering at its best, Unfortunately a dying trade but one im proud to be in.

Bloody good show mate!!!!!! If you want any advice let me know I'll PM you my mobile number. I'm glad I didn't have a lip, I wonder why yours did and mine didn't :nenau

OK if you are changing a clutch for my money take the engine out, to my mind a lot easier than dropping the torsion bars and the very heavy lopsided gearbox/transfer box, I know lots on here say box out but I have done very many and only one box out (Auto) as it needed changing, never again, I did it on the ground as no hoist at the time, engine out you are in full control, Rick

Cheers mate that would be great.. The lip was more of a raised area the size of the old friction plate would have sat on I didnt take any pictures of it before to show it but it was only a few thou raised from the surface. Ive got a video of me skimming it that I need to upload at some point as well, We also worked out from the sparks coming from the flywheel as it was skimmed that they are solid steel not cast iron so essentially its a billet flywheel.

Yep TD27 last of the great's too bad they made those god awful YD25'S and M9R'S.

So the navara lads are out there hunting down innocent Terranos to gut, I hate that :lol

:doh I was driving behind not 1 but two that seemed to be in convoy earlier on the M6, was wondering which one was going to lose it's bottom end first :lol

ahhhhhh goog old machien shop like i started my apprenticeship in.
well done but if you have the tools all jobs are easy.
gone are the days of reboreing, can you still get oversize pistons and rings.
regrinding cranks, watching the crank go round holding the jurnel true is mesmerising.
valve recutting,grinding using blue.
head skimming was a dailey job.
we still had to produce the machiening that needed doing as well.
lots of the engine jobs were cash in hand as well.
there were lots of coaches about then and making new king pins then hand reaming to fit.
rolling cars on to tyres so we could weld them undernieth with oxy,no migs then.ahhhhhhh them days lol.
ahhhhhhh the good days.
i retire at the end of this month though i retired years ago for health reasons.
i find it hard to fit everything in now so how you workers get on.
i will be off air from later as a 3 week jolly is on,wont havelaptop with me, then only home for a week, medical tests then away again for 4 weeks to tour devon.3 units going.
i would find it easier if i worked lol.

Just after I left school I had a couple of trial jobs but ended up at a place called AFN under the arches in Shepherds Bush, we reconditioned starters, dynamo's and London bus windscreen wiper motors, one of my jobs was to put the armatures in a lathe and skim the coms, good job for me as not many could cope with these little armatures, but I scored as had been using a lathe since I was 4 years old, other jobs were de-greasing and sand blasting the starter and dyno bits, we covered the whole road going range cars to trucks, happy days, Rick

Evening gents, I picked up my new clutch kit today went with the Borg And Beck same as banshee.

And for anyone interested a few pics of the 3 litre set up on a 2.7 flywheel.

And the 2.7 friction plate against the 3.0

Notice the 3 litre has double cushion springs instead of single and the actual boss for the first motion shaft is longer meaning that more of the shaft is grabbed by the splines so stronger all round.

I also forgot to add that im thinking of offering this as a service to forum members. When I remove my flywheel I will grind it and offer it out on an exchange basis. This would be £80 including postage plus a £20 surcharge until I get your old flywheel back providing it is in serviceable condition. So you could contact me and pay £100 I will then post you out a flywheel when you have removed yours I will arrange a courier to collect and refund you £20. If thats ok with the forum of course :).
