I don't know if you remember but going back probably a year ago I had a problem with my clutch slipping but would only do it sometimes and I noticed this shortly after having the remap, so was told that it maybe a problem with the clutch damper pipe so I jumped under and disconnect it by removing the threaded insert from the metal block and capping the hole but as soon as I did this I had a really noisy thrust bearing noise which I got when I pressed the clutch pedal and was a lot louder when I got the revs up. So today I replaced the whole pipe from front to back with 10mm copper pipe and refitted the block on the end with the bleed nipple and to my delight the noise has completely gone and the clutch is probably lighter. So my advice would be to leave the pipe well alone as it must be there for a reason. :thumb2.
Also my clutch was slipping due to leaking spill pipes on the injectors. Happy days. :D

Yeah diesel getting in between gearbox and bell housing.

Sorry but I can see no valid reason for both items, balance pipe if full is just none compressible fluid and cannot have any influence on the thrust bearing full stop, and derv running over the end of the engine is not going to get into the clutch housing as all T2'2 are sealed and even if it did it will not penetrate the clutch its self as it will be entering behind the flywheel and be spun of well clear of the clutch, Rick

Hi rick maybe with the clutch slip it was a coincidence that it stopped shortly after I fixed the leaking pipes :nenau. But with the noisy release bearing it started as soon as I removed the damper and has been getting on my wick for ages but today like I said I re fitted it and everything is back to normal so the pipe must do somthing as why would nissan fit them in the first place :nenau. I agree with you as to why but removing the pipe in the first place is what caused the problem, I just wish I left it alone in the first place:doh. Thanks. John

Damn I'm worried again, rick is usually right about these things too :lol

I'll still aim to get my pipes done pronto, then I can monitor any symptoms and report back :thumb2

My clutch would sometime slipped in 3/4/5 gear and was worse after the remap due to the extra power:nenau but it went away on its own which is strange as it had a new clutch not so long ago. Just out of interest has yours got one of these damper pipes ?

i replaced my damper pipe a while back after the clutch pedal started getting a tad hard again i had previously blanked it off like other on here.

clutch pedal was lighter, some seem to suffer problems with damper pipe others dont ours is now much better than before but still not as good as when rick fitted my new clutch still its been 2.5 years lol and the bearing is noisey again but they all go like that

Interesting post found from when a new terrano was suffering these symptoms at 22,000 miles

Shame there is no definitive answer tho.

Is there a seal that keeps the engine oil away from clutch plates? Wondering if this could be leaking a smidge?
i believe it is the crankshaft seal for the engine side and input shaft seal on the gearbox side. very important not to overfill either as a dodgy seal will get to the clutch eventually.

My damper pipe is gone, it's been blocked off before my ownership :thumb2

Interesting about seals, hopefully it's not that :augie

Your truck is the same year as mine, if I was you I'd get it connected again as I belive it's there for a reason.

the noise is what the damper dampens, but its not the release bearing.
my clutch damper gave up the ghost when we where on our way back from a camping holiday.
I limped to the nearest garage, removed and blanked off the damper ,re filled with fluid and bled the system and hey presto we where back on our way.
all I got was a growl when I pressed the clutch, but no noise from the release bearing.
layshaft bearing was very noisy but that gets quieter when clutch pressed.
as for clutch slip how is the state of your pedal assembly as the welds crack and bushes wear out causing issues.

Yeah, the rear crank seal.
I would have thought if the clutch plate had oil contamination, you would get slippage all the time and it would be getting worse, not intermittent.
The front seal on the gearbox input can leak too, mine did on my old 2.7, the guy got an arm full of it when he changed my clutch.

I think that with the pipe in place you have some air in it which is compressing so giving a shorter release bearing travel, and quite possibly giving a cushion to the slave cyl so removing just enough pressure to stop the clutch slipping, just thoughts as not had hands on, Rick

I have 2 t2.a 99 and a 98.
The 98 has no damper on it and is a bit noisey.
The 99 has a damper on it and is quiteer.
No slip on either.

I assumed the noise was the release bearing as it only made the noise when I pushed the clutch pedal and got louder when the revs got higher
