Hi all,.

I asked a good while back about trouble getting first gear on the Terrano. Suggestion was the slave cylinder and/or flexi hose.

This happens after about 10 miles of driving. It's fine when cold but heat is having an effect on something. It starts by being difficult to get into 1st gear and ends after a few more miles which gnashing of teeth. Garage who replaced the master cylinder to no effect and said the slave was fine said (after I got the thing hot and demonstrated it properly) "it's the synchromesh".

Replacement gearbox job.

My old Landy SIIA had no synchro on 1st and I didn't have this problem. Has long as the wheels were stationary, you could get 1st. Not with the terrano. To my mind, if the clutch is properly disengaged there should be no grinding at all. Input to gearbox stationary (or sufficiently detached from the flywheel to have no friction) and wheels stationary, what's to grind?

Anyhoo, I'm no expert on gearboxes so can anyone see that this could be a synchromesh problem. I do know the gearbox 'blew up' 50k miles ago so I don't have full faith in it.

And finally, have read the monster thread on the clutch clevis pin bushes. Mine 'expired' when the master cylider was done (had been lifting with the foot for a while). The bushes Nissan supplied didn't fit. Too small. Any one had this problem? Might try these pipe inserts mentioned in the thread: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271143300...AX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1680wt_932

First thing is to change the box oil for the correct grade and spec, Rick

I changed the oil last year (this is a long running problem that has slowly got worse). Used comma oil. Forget the grade but it was the one recommended here and everywhere else. I posted at the time it took the full 5 litres and not the (iirc) 3.5 it should have.

OK you state "gnashing of teeth" normally you will not be able get !st gear until you say select 2nd in order to stop the first motion shaft/clutch centre plate, cos the syncro in this gear works, if you get grinding then 1st gear then 1 syncro has worn out, box out and strip to sort, Rick

Thanks for the reply Rick. Must admit that I still don't understand how the input to the gearbox can be spinning around with any force when the clutch is depressed but your diagnosis agrees with the garage's. The heating up bit also confuses me. You say 'strip' but the garage said recon box. Do places still work on boxes other than to provide recon units?

Recon box will not be cheap, if you want a used one for £100 plus shipping I have one here, it was on a Bosch so will have the sensor hole, but if yours is a Zexel then it will not matter Rick

Hi Rick,

That seems very generous. Thank You. Will consider my next move but will probably PM you in a day or two for more details.

ar i remember it well the strip down and rebuild to replace syncro hubs,i said i cant earn money doing them so i never did any more in my workshop.

Plus you might forget to bolt it back on properly :lol :hide:

So my days umming and arring continue. The other day, sat at some lights, in gear but clutch down and it was definitely creeping forward. I've often thought this but it's never been so pronounced that you couldn't put it down to just being on a bit of a slope.

Given that, I've got to change the slave and flexi haven't I before the box? It's all that's left to do in the clutch actuation that I can see somehow being affected by temperature.

Hello all again.
Just paid up again (my subs ran out in July). Been a bit busy. :augie

Anyhoo, thought I'd update you on this long running story as things happened over the summer.

My garage diagnosed it as a clutch problem. So new clutch ordered and fitted. Garage said that a "clip" had disintegrated and had been stopping the clutch releasing properly. Was a separate part to the clutch. It had to be ordered separately delaying things by a day. But that's how I found out about it.

My 1st gear problems have now gone. Clutch pedal still doesn't return properly and I can believe syncromesh may be lost on 1st (from years of abuse I guess) but it is a joy to drive now rather than a terror.

Any idea what this clip may have been? Caused me lots of grief.

I can't think what they would be referring to and I've done a clutch swap :nenau

maybe worth checking the clutch pedal bracket as these do crack making the clutch pedal not return properly also the clevis pin bush breaks up changing that makes a big difference:thumb2

The clutch pedal bracket went midway through my gearbox problems. It broke on the spot welds luckily and a local shop welded it up good and proper for me. The bush is missing (disintegrated when master cylinder was pointlessly replaced by a garage - not the ones that replaced the clutch) and is on my to-do list.

Dunno if it needs rebleeding or the new master cylinder (which was a bit different from the one replaced) is the cause.

In the morning when it is cold and I get in, the pedal is often on the floor and has to be lifted. When driving, I've just got use to lifting it with my toe.

i bought the same kit banshee is suggesting but the bush needs to fit by hand do not try tapping it in it will break i did mine over a year ago all is fine saabits do the plastic type i have fitted on of theirs to with no problems:thumb2
