Morning All.

Been out in the snow last night and today in my 2.7 TDi LWB Terrano 1997.

All working very well except when I have engaged 4wd H I get this weird speed related clicking from underneath somewhere. Sounds front ish area.
The faster I go the quicker the clicking becomes.
Press the clutch and it stops, going down hill not applying and throttle and it stops. Only seems to click under load.
Put it back into 2wd and do the reverse to disengage the front hubs bit and all goes quiet again and back to normal, no noise.
Any ideas anyone:nenau

Thanks in advance

Steve,

Check your front hubs

possible hubs not engaging fully. try loosening them up by engaging 4wd drive forward slowly 20 meters disengage . reverse and repeat several times . also engage 4wd in reverse some times too. you might find this will loosen things up and the will engage fully and clicking will stop

Thanks guys.

It does sound like the nearside front hub is clicking but sound travels and I am not 100% sure where its coming from.
I will do extremes suggestion of forward then backwards later and see if that helps. If not I might strip the hubs on the weekend as per the down load.

Thanks
Steve.

Deffo the free wheeling hubs. If you strip them down you will see the coiled spring inside has broken, pretty much all auto hubs end up this way! Buy a second hand set of manual hubs (about £30 a side) and swap them. You may also find whilst this issue is present you only have rear wheel drive :doh

How about this....
Engage 4H and drive a short distance and thenwhilst still moving at a low speed drop back to 2h. In theory the hubs are still engaged at that point until you stop to reverse so if it's a hub it may still be clicking?

got to say I'd say brake rings in the hub.

Don't take it for granted that it is the nearside. As you say, sound travels and it can fool you

Get the wife to listen underneath to decide which side is clicking while on test drive . com :lol:lol:lol

It "could" also be the CV joint

ALL.
Thanks for the replies.
As per Jims Terrano suggestion - Yes it still clicks if I go from 4wd to 2wd without reversing leaving the hubs engaged. Still need to do extremes forward backward suggestion a few times, will try that next.
I too had thoughts it might be the C.V. joint. Although I thought they only clicked on steering lock. Further investigation needed.
Hope its not a CV joint, lot more work in changing one of those.:(

Thanks again

Steve

Fixed it! Fixed it! Fixed it! Fixed it!

All.

FIXED IT! FIXED IT! FIXED IT!

Went to my local Focus store on the way home and as per Extremes suggestion I spent 15 mins going forwards and backward engaging 4wd and reversing in 4wd, going forward again then disengaging 4wd, drive in 2wd then repeat many times to try and free a sticky hub. I think you get the idea.
Anyway did this and it was still clicking from underneath somewhere:confused:

Back on the drive I climbed underneath for a look and there it was:eek: The exhaust heat shield was rubbing on the front prop shaft Universal Joint.:doh

Bent it up out the way and hey presto all clicking has gone:clap
When I selected 4wd it activated the front prop, as it turned the U J rubbed against the heat shield, the faster I went the clicking got faster. What I assume must happen is the engine must lean slightly when its under load. Take foot off the accelerator and the engine must settle giving clearence and no clicking. Had me fooled!

Anyway a lesson learn't and a free fix which has to be a good result.
Auto hubs are working perfectly, always were.

Thanks everyone for your imput. What a great site.
Looking forward to putting some faces to names at some meets this year.

Cheers
Steve.

strange cos i got the same symptons happen today, will check heat shield first of all, hope it is that
