over here in northern ireland insurance for first time buyers is ridiculous, for example my cub could be looking at a insurance around £2000 for a £800 car low CC if he's lucky so i was thinking about looking for a classic car as this i'm lead to believe will be a way round it, how do i know whats classic and whats not.

thx mark

hi mark, i have a 1968 cortina on classic insurance, but they have a minimum age of 21 for drivers, some are 25, have ring around there may be some who will insure him, i think the car has to be at least 15yr old, :thumb2

Ooohhh... My Mav qualifies for being 15 years old, might consider that as I'm JUST over 25...ish....:lol
If I'm twice that do I get a double discount?:nenau

Insurance companies do not like Parents insuring the car and having the "Young" driver as an additional driver, in the past this was the way around it. Not anymore, they now ask what other cars your family has !

They probably have this information as well.

Start with the smallest lowest group car and wait a few years I guess.

thx he's 18 and it looks like it be 02 ford fiesta, i have a austin healy in a shed back in shrewsbury but it needs some work first lol, i just recall being in a workshop and someone working on a rust bucket austin healy sprite he said it's for his cub when he passed his test so i presumed classic insurance way round a new driver.

Be cautious of Adrian Flux "Cherished policies" not quite what they are made out to be... lot of members on my other forum have had big problems including myself :(

Adrian Flux are one of the sponsors on my "other forum" :)
As said, classic policies nearly always have a minimum age requirement and also often require the classic to be a second car. ie. you have to have an "ordinary" car on a seperate insurance.
Basically a classic policy is not a way round for the younger drivers.

Can you use classic car insurance for Social, domestic and pleasure purposes, including going to work in it 5 days a week ?
Maybe that is a limitation.
Classic car insurance I guess is aimed at people who cherish the car, keep it out of the rain, avoid snow reduce risk, use it at weekends.

Going to work in it comes under "commuting" rather than s,d&p.
I know plenty of people that do just that, it is something you would have to check with your insurer. I think commuting was definitely not on any of my classic policies, in fact it is definitely excluded from one of my non classic policies.

Yeah they were going to be sponsors on my "other forum" but then we sent them packing because of the scam they had pulled on a number of members. I aint going into detail, will by pm if your seriously interested. They also offered us club discounts which is why so many folk went to them, but then an alarming number of members had the same issue.
It was all to do with there so called "recognising of no claims" as dont forget if your motor is a secoind car you cant use your no claims on the policy.
They even had a representative come and join the club to smooth out the issues with the policys, I dont think he works for them anymore :lol

My daughter had a TR7 for a while and she was 20 at the time. She couldnt get "Classic" insurance as it was her only car and under 21. The following year at 21 she did get cheaper classic cover but still as only car, so not properly cheap but still built up no claims.
I've got business use on my cortina and modified engine. It's one of my other cars but IS a classic policy so only 120 squid fully comp agreed value etc.
Usually classic policy dont give you any NCB

Yes I am interested in what you have to say about Flux, if for no other reason than to warn my mates. I have used them in the past but go with Heritage these days, nice and easy to deal with and decent rates. The only real reason I don't use Flux is because of the rainforest worth of forms they send. Heritage is just a phonecall.
I have never claimed off any insurance company, but I gather that is when you see who is good or not.
