Zippy & Terranosaurus,

Thanks for the reply to my query. This is going to be my next maintenance job. Unless anything breaks before...

Definitely worth the Tenner

Thanks again to all you guys who've offered advice. :bow

I got "down and dirty" yesterday and changed the rear differential oil.

I got some "Carlube", by Tertrosyl, 80w90 which is rated API GL-5 and matches the specification given in the TII manual.

It was a pretty easy job really, after a warm up drive I removed the filler plug with a half inch socket drive and then placed my oil catcher (5 litre plastic bottle laid on i'ts side with a large hole cut into it) under the axle.

I loosened the drain plug and cautiously removed it without dropping it in the old oil, now there's a surprise :clap !!

After letting it drain for a while I cleaned all the yucky stuff from the drain plug and replaced it.

The tricky bit was then deciding how to get almost 3 litres of oil through that hole.

The trusty old washing up liquid bottle came to hand and in no time I'd got it all in.

Guess what ??

I took it for a drive and all the noises had stopped.

The old oil smelled really bad, not like oil should smell, but then after doing 120,000 miles I suppose I should have expected it to smell bad, I would :lol

Makes me wonder if I should replace the Automatic Transmission oil now too.

We hate to say "we told you so!"....but WE DID!!!! LOL

Yes I'd change it - chances are its rarely been touched, if ever since it stopped getting warranty services....

You did use LSD oil didn't you? LSD oil tends to smell worse than ordinry diff oil but neither are very nice, engine oil is like air freshener compared to diff oil.

ALways good practice to change the fluid on an unknown motor and ATF can take a real beating if abused so I'd say worth doing.

Must get all of the drive train fluids changed on mine before we go to France. Thanks for the reminder. Could be a job for one of the May Bank Holidays.

Worst part in these cars is snapping the bolts that hold on the sump guard:doh

I had to drill and retap after changing the oils on my T2 at the front:doh
