My R3mR 2.7 TDi circa 1995/6 always started virtually instantly (over last 2 plus years) if I kept my foot off the throttle, ignition on until both glow plug lights went out then crank and she fired up as quick as you could release the starter switch.

Wife has been using the truck for the last 6 weeks or so and when I went to start it yesterday it took ages of cranking before it fired up. I quized the missus who said it had been a poor started for several weeks but she found that if she depressed the throttle first it would fire up straight away.

I tried this and she is right all it needs is one quick depression of the throttle pedal and she will start instantly. Thing is why this sudden change ?

Anyone got any ideas what might have changed?

I intend to change the fuel filter at the weekend as its done about 18,000 miles since it was last done about 2-3 years ago.

No idea, the usual drill for the 2.7 TD or TDi is defo 'feet off' isn't it.... :nenau

First thought "Glow Plugs", if when started it runs rough for a few minutes, with a little white smoke.
Only needs one to fail to cause similar problems. If 2 go you will really notice.
If 4 go.... have a second battery standing by as you may flatten the first trying to start it when cold.

2nd, when I fitted a new battery, I noticed an improved starting time.

3rd, could be a change of fuel, a tank full of different fuel can make very subtle differences. Try a tank of the Shell optimax, or BP .... something...?
Put an injector cleaner in with the fuel.

4th if it continues, either mini filter or main filter, or air getting in the fuel lines, but if this is the case it will get worse over time.

Hope this helps, but have you changed anything before this happened, different fuel etc? :nenau

shes ruined your best toy, keep her away from it lol

Actually, if it's used for lots of short journeys, ie less than 5 miles, after a while she gets sluggish, so give her as good thrashing now and again.

If that doesn't work, try thrashing the car.... :lol :lol

Red line it through the gears, you will notice the improvement next time you start her.

What can you say to that LOL!

But one thought, if it is the glowplugs getting senile, try leaving it a few more seconds after the light goes out before turning to the start position and see if that helps?

Starting Ritual

Went to it this morning car was frozen over.

Depressed throttle pedal once, turned key and it started instantly.

Left it all day, went to it tonight, did NOT touch throttle and it just cranked over for four or five seconds before it fired up !

As its an electronic throttle wonder if pressing it down re-sets something ?

Bought a fuel filter today so will start with that at the weekend as its overdue. Will probably check the Mini filter as well as its quite accessible on the R3mR layout.

As said before try changing the glow plugs i bet that sorts it straight away :thumb2

When I do the fuel filter on Saturday I am going to check the glow plugs with my AVO meter and see if they are working.

Anyone have any recommendations for replacements ? My workmate who used to drive a Maverick reckons Bosch are as good as any.

NGK are more reliable than some of those unbranded ones from Milners, in my opinion. Not tried Bosch !

what ever happened to champion spark plugs ? i used to use them in my racing bikes ( long time ago  )

if it is fly by wire and touching the throttle sorts it then it is an engine management problem, Rick

Still going stong are Champion plugs pretty decent as well though I am an NGK man myself.

Truck was picked up this morning by my local mechanic he has tested the four glow plugs, two not doing anything, one as good as new, one doing a bit.

As mine has an intercooler the plugs are part ceramic and twice the price of the basic 2.7 TD ones with a trade discount they are not too bad.

Thanks for everyones tips spot on as usual !

Mechanic visited me this afternoon having taken one of the glow plugs out and it's a tad shorter than the one his motor factors have supplied.

Trouble is someone might have fitted the shorter ones as they are so much cheaper!

The one listed for the 2.7 TDI is about 4 mm longer than the standard 2.7 TD he wants to know which one I want fitting and is after a diffinitive length does anyone know the answer?
Its at times like this I wish I did not have an import!

And another thing most 2.7 engines are listed as 2663 cc the engine/chassis plate on my truck says its 2664 cc !!! agh.....

I have phoned Milner Off Road and they do not sell a glow plug for the 2.7 R3mR its not listed on the PR50 platform on the website as its different to the ones shown for the Terrano!

Still worth a try.

Weird innit since the R3MR is supposed to have the Terrano engine....:nenau

has anyone got an old T2 plug they can post to you for comparison?

For what it's worth the HKT catalogue I have shows:
TERRANO (Import)
N-VBY21,WBYD21 8/1986- (TD27 eng) 4 11 12 PN135
Q-WBYD21 11/1988-1995 (TD27T eng) 4 11 12 PN138
PR50 9/1995-1999 (TD27Eti eng) 4 11 12 CP03

The PN135 & PN138 look to be about 4mm or so different..... then of course there's the CP03 which is listed as the correct one. Just need to find the NGK equiv.

The complete catalogue is here:
