cant getmy terrano into 4wd thick as ?"!k, please help?

been out in my '97 Terrano 2 tonight and was stuck in the snow!! Stupid thing to do as it was only couple of inches on a slight incline. Put into 4 low to help and according to my mates who sat there laughing in there disco's that it wasn't engaging as only the rear wheels spun. I am not very mechaniclly minded so dont know if its true. To be honest I feel such a pillock as I'd never had cause to use the 4wd and thus didn't really know if I'd even put it in right. In neautral and engine running selected the 4wd low, then back into gear. The same thing happened in 4 high too, just rear wheels.
Felt that stupid I turned round and went the other way. I'm asking you guys for help as your normal, have Nissans and dont go on about Disco This, range rover that if you get the drift.
Any advice greatly appreciated and I can take the redicule, honest:nenau

does it say automatic on your wheel hub centres ?

that one problem solved. They're automatic. Bloody cold out there in shorts, lol.

Did the 4wd icon light up on your dash? & stay on?

You'll probably have to remove the hub centre cap/trim on the wheel to look. Simple pull off, push on. I don't actually think mine say automatic or anything else on them.

It does sound like the hubs aren't engaging from what you've said.

i took centers off and it says automatic across the hub. The light icon on the dash comes on when you put into 4 high and low and stays on when supposedly driving in 4wd.

If it was me, I'd take it out again - without my mates watching & probably not wearing shorts! Engage 4wdh drive forwards a bit, back to 2wd & reverse a few metres. Repeat several times. It might be that the mechanism is sticking, particularly if you've not used it for a while. If 4wd engages you'll be able to tell, the car & the steering feels very different.
If not - then as suggested, it's time to strip, grease & check the hubs. Or get someone to do it for you.
