Does anyone know what way the water flows through the heater?

The heater hoses come off each side of the thermostat housing, as can sort of be seen in this picture (Ignore the coloured lines round the BBCV, old picture)

They go into the heater matrix, one over the other, as can be seen at the back of the engine bay to the drivers side of the I/C.

My guess is the top hose on the matrix, is the "in" (is this right?), but which side of the thermostat housing should be connected to this?

it should be the flow above the return.
it should be after the thermostat so as to heat engine faster.
the thermostat has a small hole to allow water pressure to escape.
if i am wrong some one here will put me right.

the right hand pipe in your pic should be the flow, the little hole in the stat is purely to vent air, Rick

does this help

Thanks, ironically, the flow around the engine is the bit I did know, as we did that at when I was at collage, it's the bit that the diagram does not show, which is where the heater pipes come off that confuses me.

Thanks Rick, so just to get this straight (I was never good with left and right :doh ) The flow and return are as the arrows in this picture.
