Buying advice needed

When you get it home, have a good look under the truck,you are looking for rust, although you should be safe with a 2003, I had a 2001 which was quite rusty but my 2005 is very clean underneath.
I would change all the filters and oils..engine, gearbox and diffs, you MUST use GL4 oil in the gearbox and NOT GL5, this will wreck the gearbox. Use limited slip diff (LSD) oil in the rear diff also.
You may have a problem if/when the engine oil light stays on, this is a fault on the 3.0l, but is only the oil pressure switch, this is easy to exchange.

Thanks for all the advice so far. To update on the situation i still do not have the terrano yet!
The trader could not be there for our arranged pick up date so he offered to service it to make up for it but upon doing this discovered the turbo needs replacing. This is going to be done over the next few days and i am to ring on Monday to get an idea of when it will be ready.
Having sold my van last Saturday i have no wheels so its been a nightmare doing my work.
My question now is should i be worried about this particular terrano now? I wouldn't of thought a o2 plate would have a turbo problem after 83k miles. Should i perhaps steer clear or think at least it didn't happen once i had it and when its done it will be all sorted.
Any thoughts are much appreciated.

With the turbo, it depends on how the vehicle has been looked after, regular oil changes with good oil and letting the engine run on for a minute or so before turning it off, if you have been booting it.
So sounds like it's not been treated that well.
Can't believe you still don't have the car yet, personally I would get my money back as the cars not as advertised and you need a car now, he should have at least lent you a car in the mean time.
Try and get your money back and look elsewhere

Sorry late into this thread. I seem to remember there some probs on early 3.0 engines including turbo , VVT I think :augie
I'd say what was said earlier mate , if you've just paid deposit and he's messed you about on completion time, then in theory he's in breech anyway.
Cash in and walk away.
PS 4trax are indeed poo offroad , they were just cheap and that's why farmers had them:/

I agree that i should be provided with transport while its being fixed. I will phone him first thing in the morning.
To be fair after researching about the terrano for the last couple of weeks i really want one now. When i went to collect last weekend but the trader couldn't make it i got another chance to have a good look at it and am fairly sure it has not been abused with heavy off-road use as the under-side is very clean with a just a few spots of surface rust and no visible dents or scrapes anywhere. If it has had a been abused in any way to cause a turbo problem i imagine its from towing a caravan or something similar but of course im no expert.
While there i spoke to the garage next door which i thought was part of the same business but apparently they are separate and they just do all the work for the trader. The guys i spoke to said that the terrano was a good truck but has not been looked after by its previous owner. They also said that when it was in for its mot the trader was saying he should have priced it higher as he had so many phone calls for it and had not researched the value before-hand as it was a trade in he just wanted to move on. He is currently moving yards and is in the process of selling off a lot of his stock. How much of this is true i don't really know. Also when i spoke to the trader the last time on the phone and found out about the turbo problem it sounded like the terrano was becoming a problem he could do without and having to pay for a turbo replacement was going to eat up most his profit.
I think i should walk away really but at the same time if everything i have been told is true then it could be worth waiting for. I doubt i will find another exactly the same any time soon. There is a nice looking commercial on ebay but with a lot more miles, a bit more money and is much further away. I might give them a ring tomorrow to find out more but i dont really want to rush out and buy something just because i need some wheels quick.
My van i just sold was cheap to buy with a lot of miles and had a few things wrong with it but once i had sorted it all out it was the most reliable vehicle i have owned. This terrano being relatively cheap to buy, even if i have to spend a fair bit once the warranty has expired to get it up to standard i could potentially end up with a nice 4x4 i can keep and look after for a long time as i always look after my cars and could always sell on for its proper value.

No probs, just push him for a definite completion time then. It's not a hard job once he has the new turbo . Check it when you pick it up though that it is a new one etc and no obvious oil leaks or missing nuts. check exhaust for blowing sounds etc.
Make sure that the bill of sale quotes the new turbo fitted

I spoke to the trader today and been told its a genuine nissan re-conditioned turbo that will be fitted. He said he would not be financially viable for him to fit a new one. He also said i could come and get a temporary car to drive until the terrano is ready which is great but i will have to get the train down tomorrow so i might not bother as i can picked up for work next week and would rather save the train fair.
I have been looking for another one online with the same spec but cant find one for anything like the price i would be paying for this one. There was a couple i have phoned up about but were already sold.
I have found one in the autotrader that could be a more sensible choice. Its a 3dr 2.7 tdi SE w reg up for £3895. Its priced high because it is direct from the coast guard with full service history and just 25k on the clock. It looks mint however it is blue with a bright yellow bonnet and roof!
I am tempted to go see it and if its all good see if i can strike a good deal as doubt traders sell many cars this time of year so might be glad of a sale. It dose not look as smart as the one i have already paid the deposit on but would probably be the more sensible choice. Plus being a 2000 model its about £40 a year cheaper on tax but that is not really a huge concern. The higher price would certainly stretch my budget and i would have to use a credit card for some of it which i was trying to avoid. I would hate to buy the 3 litre one and find i have endless problems with it. This 2.7 one has probably been well looked after. I am very much in two minds about it all now. I just need some wheels and quickly!

I would walk away from the trader, it's likley to be a turbo from a breakers yard which isn't always a bad thing if the doner vehicle had been looked after.

I've heard of several people with the ex coastguard T2 and had no problems with them. Personally I prefer the 2.7 but that's just me.

If the turbo is a recon, it will come with warranty, just ask the trader about it and make sure you see a copy of the warranty.
£3895 for a 2000 is very steep IMO, £1900 over what you said your budget was.:nenau
