hi all, just got back from hols. Towing our caravan we noticed a burning rubber smell when under load going up steep banks and then it goes when on the level. Could it be the hoses under the bonnet? Any ideas anyone? Cheers Darren.

Clutch under excess strain?

Failing that did you have any under inflated tyres?

hi Banshee, never had a problem with the clutch but have had two new insa dakars fitted to the rear axle last week and about to fit two new front ones this week. Checked pressure before we set off. The smell seemed to be coming from the heater vents but the temp. Gauge was bang in the middle.

I would have def said it was clutch then if it was coming through the heaters

Or it could be your "saggyknackersack" :sly

My mates air com pump seized up mid journey & he got a really bad burning smell but didn't know what it was until the next day he got smoke pouring out of the bonnet as the belt started to melt:doh might be worth ckecking it if you have air con

my own opinion ( I know nuffin ) is I think its fan / alt /power steering belt slipping ..... more likely fan belt as it happenes under load ..... but like I said I know nuffin

although the last time this happened to me .... it always happened when it was wet / raining ...... it turned out to be tyre debris thrown up from the road onto the exhaust ...... silly I know

Was it defo rubber smell. When I used to tow with mine I used to be able to smell hot gear oil. I put it down to the extra heat from engine heating the gearbox up. No after effects from it though.

Hi Jim, did you get it all the time when towing or just under heavy load? I could smell it just as we hit the top of the banks and yes it was definitely a rubber smell. Could it possibly be the water hoses under the bonnet getting really hot?
