from cold my oil pressure light takes 3 seconds to go out.
when the engine is warm it goes out almost straight away.
could this be related to my oil burning problem?

both the TD & TDi have oil filters that hang down, so they do not drain when standing, in my experience the oil light should go out almost straight away, the petrol version on the other hand has its filter set at an angle and so at least half of it drains over a long standing period, (several hours) depending on how good the one way flap is in a particular filter, but they all drain eventually, so these take 4 or more seconds for the light to go out and if the bearings are a little worn they rattle till the oil gets there, so in answer to your question, no the light in itself will not influence your oil consumption, but it could be an indication of excessive engine wear, which WILL cause high oil consumption, Rick

thanks for that, used to have a petrol and it did rattle for the first few seconds on start up come to think of it.
gonna check all the simple things first before i dive into anything.:thumbs

had a bit of a poke about at the weekend and i found an oily patch on the underside of the intercooler.also the housing that fits on top of the inlet manifold which the intercooler hose clamps onto was also very oily.took off the housing, cleaned it and fitted a new o ring.also cleaned the intercooler and the oil off the top of the inlet manifold.
not had chance to presure test the intercooler at work yet as we are flat out with work.
gonna whip it off again on saturday to see if the oil has come back and fit a new oil pressure switch.
dont seem to smell of oil as bad but not had chance to have a proper look.
