after owning my latest terrano for a few months i have noticed quite a strong smell of oil burning, when first started and while driving.
oil has been changed for 10/40 mineral a month or so ago but still getting the smell.
could this be the turbo or valve seats wearing.only just done 101000 miles.
got full sevice history and no mention of anything untoward.
any help greatly appreciated.

Pull the pipe off intercooler if loads of oil pours out its the turbo.

could be the oil blow by valve thingy aswell, they like to fail :lol

how will i know if this is shagged.it all looks pretty clean with just a light film of oil on the inside of the pipes.
leading me to suspect the valve seats.

looks like it will be getting new valve seats then.
how hard a job is this and can it be done with the head in situ?

do u mean valve stem seals as valve seats wont make it burn oil just not allow the vale to seat correctly :nenau

I'd be looking for a boost leak. I had blue smoke all the time due to this, people were saying my rings were worn or my turbo was on its way out, BULLSH!T :D mines done 145k and its only just run in

Try checking the intercooler for a split/hole, has it got an oily mark anywhere ? get it tested by your local rad specialist.

Egr valves stick, mine did, get rid of that.

my inlet manifold gasket was also leaking.

I'd also remove the throttle flap as the spindle seal can leak ( i removed the lot and filled the hole with chemical metal ) and reseal the gasket with copper trv

thats quite a list:eek:
can get the intercooler pressure tested at work:thumbs
as for the other bits it will have to be the weekend when i have a look at that.
cheers for the input stinka:bow
had four of these motors over the years and this is the newest with the lowest milage so i refused to believe it was anything major.local garage fishing for work i think.

can anyone tell me how long the oil pressure light should stay on when started from cold.
might just be me but it seemed to stay on for longer than it should.

thanks for that.will have a count when i start it from cold.:thumbs

Not saying youve got a problem but 3 seconds is a long time for the oil light to go out .I would expect it to be almost instantly at least within 1 second

mine is 2-3 secs too might be down to the oil pressure switch but seams i have no other bad symptoms im not worried so not going to spend money on a new pressure switch:thumbs

Mine goes out almost before the engine has fully started. I turn the key, the engine spins over a couple of times, and then as it catches, the light is out.
