Ok the good news is the wagon passed the mot. Bad news is there's a few rusty bits that are going to need attending to before the next years one. Cheeky man said run it for a year and then scrap it. Not doing that and will spend as much as needed to get her back to health.

The sills have gone a bit and a chassis leg is going. The man said it'll need the body taken off to do it properly, if that's te case so be it. We owe it to these old trucks to keep them going. If the powers that be ha their way we'd all be driving .8l Daewoos etc.

Anyone know a good welder in the east of England?

BOLLOCKS.

anyhoo, rusty bits doesnt sound too bad. you need to investigate them sills. Bear in mind, that this is a shell over a chassis, so the drivers and passenger sills that you can see, cover the actual structural sill. Worst case is you cut off the outer sill, repair inner sill, then either weld back a replacement outer sill or make one up. either way, its not the end of the world. As for chassis leg...what? where, did he show you??? Never heard that as an issue on these, unelss his terminalogy differs from mine.

im no mechanic, but this doesnt sound too bad, especially if his solution is to run it for a year then scrap it. Id go get a second opinion from someone who cares.

I had this a few years back, garages saying £700 this, £1000 that, still kept passing MOT and there are no issues.

i had the same a few years ago......keep patching it up, i now only take it to a garage that only does mots.......does not do repairs, exhausts or welding so they dont gain anything by failing it.....a nice honest mot as recommended by martin lewis. oh and by the way whats wrong with a deawoo matiz 8ooc ive got one and my wife loves driving it. lol

Agreed sills shouldn't be a real problem. However I've never heard of chassis being that bad either. When the better weathers comes get underneath and give a real good clean and tidy up. Then a nice under skirt of underseal or waxoil what ever. Did that to mine and it's been well worth doing that trick to the whole of the underbody.

Check the rear seat belt mountings in the rear wheel archs, give them a good looking it and fix if needed. Better to be safe.

Thanks mateys. Was feeling really down after the prognosis, bloke pretty much made me feel that it was the end of the road for it and was impossible to repair! I didn't mean any rudeness with the matiz thing, just using it as an example of small economical car.

My mate said his disco was 10x worse and he says we can sort it which cheered me up.

Thanks for making me feel a bit more positive. Here's a pic of her today, she says hi!

seriously dude, I know you shouldnt judge a book by its cover, but that car lokos in superb condition, and with most 4x4s external looks usually reflect careful ownership. I have had mechanics try to write mine off, and trust me, mine doesnt compare to yours!

about 2 years ago, maybe more, car failed on un heard of amounts of rust, better scrap it I was told. F Off i replied. Took it home, checked the rust, found it all to be overly exaggerated. Got a second opinion and was told up to £1000 to fix the rusty sills....£1000? Patched it up (safely mind, it didnt need welding) and took for MOT, flew through.

year after, again, no issues with rust, just failed on handbrake and drop links, got them adjusted, all ok.

Year after that (this one just gone) same again, drop links and handbrake. Now, mine has rusty wings both sides, repaired OUTER sills, rusty rear seat belt mount (its not that bad to be honest, but does need welding sometime) and the body work paint job has seen better days.

apart from that, actually, its pretty flippin good. Drives (after MANY REPAIRS by myself) faultless (ish)

Garage keeps saying its good underneath, and I believe him. Problem is, garages differ in their opionions, which is fine, but there are some that are in league with the local scrappy, and some that are happy to take yoru truck off yoru hands to "pull trailers round fields". take what they say with a pinch of salt and ALWAYS get a second opinion, especially from this club.

trust me, these cars have to be losing their rear axle and gearbox before they are even considered for scrap. They are good solid trucks that are VERY easy to fix cheaply.

grrr....grinds my beans when garages do this, it really does.

heres my suggestion, read the codes anyway on the car, even if the light isnt coming on, look for previously stored codes for some history.

You can keep a car going for as long as you like, just depends on the amount of effort your willing to put in to do that, remember triggers twenty year old brush ten new heads and seven new handles:thumbs.

like the quote from christof123.....classic "only fools and horses" for those who are too young to remember

you may be able to get another but will it be mechanically sound and know the history like you do with your truck.

If the chassis leg is that bad he would have failed it get it sorted asap.my lads micra failed on a bit of welding, and horn.when my missus went to pick it up she was told its really bad needs loads doing may as well scrap it. but we will buy it off you.she looked at the fail sheet and told him thats nothing we will sort it.£100 later sorted, they just after a cheap motor

worth buying a welder now you own a disco spudd. :D

spiteful lol.more rust on the terrano sport than i had on any landy.as for my 96 terrano NO rust.got a bare patch on wing where vandalised over a year ago and still shiny metal.when i say no rust i mean no rust.
