fit a disc handbrake to the rear drive shaft

what are the pro's and cons of disc brake on driveshaft

Disk handbrakes are rubbish - why would you want to.

Transmission handbrakes are also rubbish (see landies rolling forwards 5" when foot brake applied) so again - why?

i dont have any rears

and if i did, they would get wet and muddy

also discs are better aint they :nenau

You don't have any rears????

Disks are more efficent as brakes but for a parking brake a drum is more effectice.

Water doesn't really effect modern brakes.

nope done the download several times and i get brake for an hour or 2 then it just stops. ive asked several time but nothing

all i want is to be able to stop.

im going to throw the load sensor out and use a t piece and re pipe it all and new brakes all round now.

maybe the adjusters are dead and keep slipping

Mine are great so could well be the adjusters.

Handbrake will lock up the rears at low speed on gravel if you declutch and on sunday I just parked up at sibbertoft on one of the hills and got out to which one fo the Landy lads said something along the lines of stop showing off because you have a handbrake that works.

Personally I am very wary of disk handbrakes I have seen 2 cars roll off when cooling disks contracted and the handbrakes released, one nearly ended up in the bottom of te valley about 1 mile away, it hit the only fence post left on that side of te carpark and stopped.

Should be fairly staighforward to tell if the adjusters are backing themselves off.

hmm. ok time to come clean

ive been working on a disc brake conversion for the rears. im close!

but cant work out the hand brake ??????

You need a caliper that had a handbrake built in in the first place - loads about in scrap yards. Sierras used to be favourite for Mk1/2 escort conversions but they're a bit thin on the ground now. Plenty of stuff got rear discs these days, or citreon put the handbrake on the front on some cars which are of course disks anyway.

well i got the disc mounted ... thats the easy bit. temp patern backplate made up to mount the calipers . but will have to change calipers then

so got to find some handbraked calipers to fit the discs
(standard t2 front discs)

and there i was thinking this was going to be easy

just chasing some rear calipers today but i need an answer quick.....

for rear handbrake is that cable run or fluid

any other info you think i might need will be really helpful. even if its something stupid you think i might have missed

Handbrake needs to be a completely separate system from the foot brake to pass mot so either a mechanical (read cable) system on the same calipers or you can use a 2nd set of calipers operated hydraulically.

as you see i realy have no idea.... but if they are rear calipers they must have a bit already for handbrake. wouldnt they?

i was just wondering as ive seen some cosworth ones would the do the job

Yes many rear calipers will have a handbrake built in however there are exceptions.

Citreon sometimes fit the jandbrake to the front wheels.

Landrover use a transmission brake on the diff.

Many 4x4s and plenty fo cars, porsche for one, use a small drum brake inside the bell of the disc.

But yes Sierra/Escort Cosworth ones should be fine, however check the handbrake mechanism is free and working as the ford ones are known for being rubbish.

Tell me more about the txt ya sent me buddy.?
139 p c d brake discs.?

Transmission handbrakes are also rubbish

Are they?

The transmission handbrake on the Patrol works great - probably the best handbrake I've had on any motor. The braking effect is mutiplied by the diff ratio - and it works equally on all wheels (2 normally, but 4 in 4wd).

Like most things on Land Rovers, I suspect that the transmission hand brake works great when its working, but not when it isn't (if you see what I mean)

Cheers
Andrew
