The transmission handbrake on the Patrol works great - probably the best handbrake I've had on any motor. The braking effect is mutiplied by the diff ratio - and it works equally on all wheels (2 normally, but 4 in 4wd).

Like most things on Land Rovers, I suspect that the transmission hand brake works great when its working, but not when it isn't (if you see what I mean)

Cheers
Andrew

Try see what happens when one wheel doesn't have a lot of grip. Diff turns and bye bye. They also have that nasty rocking effect - suppose its a personal thing but I'm really not keen at all.

They fill up with mud and grit even more than standard drums do too.

:sly didn't think so :sly
Colin you'll probably need a bigger handbrake LEVER too if you want those turns to happen with discs on the back:augie

Mud? Whassat? :lol

I don't understand why they should fill up with mud - at least, not unless I get the 'Troll stuck in a Scottish bog and it sinks!!:eek: The drum is well out of the way on the back end of the transmission case, not on the rear axle like standard drums/discs.

well i thought discs alll round would give me more stop and playtime

wont discs give me playtime then

ok so lets assume discs on the back is possible.... cos its bound to happen

but can you get shut off valves or something to play with the brakes on the front

ie if its spinning, brake it... sort of diff locker

They'll be great with servo help, but unless you do a slave on the handbrake to it'll be a beast to kick the back end out on the lever.:augie
Least that's what I've found:rolleyes:
I've got hydraulic on me cortina:sly

i could put 2 calipers on the back one for brake and one for handbrake

but there must be an easier way

You can get ordinary horizontal ones if you want of just adapt yours.
Didnt know about the cable thing for MOT though:nenau
Better check that out:augie

i did..... they just said if it works, and passes the brake test its fine

ok well i collected the parts today... and im pleased to announce...

you can disc brake a t2

i have discs on the rear with the calipers that cam with them almost bolt straight on
but no handbrake

or i can change calipers to get handbrake

still very simple though i recon

ok they are on my spare diff... albeit fixed to a ply template bracket for now... but i got them and they fit..... as long as you run on 16" rims

no hand brake with these calipers , hope to find some handbrake ones tomorrow in the breakers like the ones i have here.

if not i hope to get the template turned into proper metal brackets tomorrow and do the other side
