I need a new brake vacuum pump for my Terrano Sport 2004 2.7 tdi if anyone has one for sale or knows where I can get one please.
My Car has only done 35000 miles and I bought it new. I have just had a back brake cylinder done but it didn't seem right when I got it back from the garage so when they've had another look, it's the pump now. Nissan are quoting £760 for the part. Oh, I forgot I'm told it's it's gear driven. Thanks.
 
I have one for a 98 TDi but cannot confirm the 2004 is the same, how do you know it is the pump? Rick
 
The mechanic told me. I just drive it to tow my horse trailer so don't really know much about it I'm afraid. I took it originally because the handbrake wasn't holding the car on an incline very well. The garage have been trying to get a part without success and said that the Nissan price was a joke.

OK post a couple of pics of the pump and if it is the same then I will send it off, but there are other things that can give lack of vac, other hoses, stuck valves rusted metal pipe not least of all rubber O ring master cyl to servo, Rick
 
I'm 99% sure there isn't a brake vacuum pump fitted to any of the TDI's as the vacuum comes from the inlet manifold to the brake servo:augie the 2.7 engines are gear driven from the front of the engine & on my old 1999 & my 2005 there wasn't/isn't any pump for the brakes. The older TD's had brake vacuum pump fitted on the back of the alternator but the TDI's don't have this. The only other pump is the one for the ABS but if this was faulty it would have flagged up the warning light:thumbs TBH sounds as if they haven't bled the brakes & adjusted the hand brake properly of trying to scam some money out of you
 
Sounds like you need a second opinion, if you can't do it your self take it to another garage but how about not telling them that the other garage diagnosed a vacuum pump.

I will speak to the mechanic tomorrow and ask if he has looked at other options as I certainly don't want to be paying a grand to get it fixed if I have to buy new.
 
Where is this part located? I should be seeing Rick Sunday, if Rick can point at it I will take pictures :lol
 
Vacuum Test

I would want a vacuum test on the pump by checking it at the pump end to rule out loss in the pipework.

On my Terrano it was perished and rusted pipework Cost me £25 ish to replace rusted steel with copper and rubber with silicone. The pump was fine at 135,000 km and on an N reg vehicle too.

co'mon guys you should know your trucks better then that..

the above post is incorrect, the vacuum pump on the TDI is mounted beneath the injector pump and is driven by the injector pump drive sproket.. diesel's do not create vacuum as the have no throttle body and diesel engines with turbo chargers create positive pressure at idle.

So yes get a second opinion, the hand brake has nothing to do with the foot brake, brake servo, vacuum pump, it isn't even hydraulic it is cable operated which leads me to believe they are taking you for a ride.

P.S. that particular pump can be found on the TD25 and also QD32 also share the same vacuum pump.

for the sake of all that is holy. unless you are sure you know don't post misinformation. it makes it confusing for the next person who types that question in the search box
 
take a look in the workshop downloads it shows the vac pump under ip.to take it out there is a hidden bolt behind a front nut,had me stumped untill i worked it out.

The hand brakes on these, if neglected are not that great, but when adjusted correctly are great.
Mine can hold a two tonne boat and car on a 1 in 5 slip way, no problem, not left in gear, and no brake on trailer.

The secret is correct adjustment of the brake adjusters and hand brake cable, as the so called Auto Adjusters don't work on my 1995 td version anyway...

The handbrake mechanism is not affected by the hydraulic cylinders or anything to do with the vacuum, however if the brake shoes are contaminated with brake fluid, then you have lost most of the brake efficiency.

Handbrake adjustment is fairly easy, and starts with slackening off the adjuster under the handbrake lever, BEFORE removing the rear drums, this is the secret to the hand brake adjustment, and before any adjustment is made within the drum. Finally, after the drums are adjusted correctly, with minimal rubbing, only then take up the slack under the handbrake cable.:thumb2

to be fair i purchased t2 with faulty pump,but took a year to finally die.in 15years of wvo this is the only pump thats failed me which had only ever been on derv.anyway its all ok now.:clap

I was sure there wasn't one & never noticed it on this truck but not had to get under it much at all & never spotted it on my last T2 which I did have to work on but sold that one over 6 years ago so am a little rusty:augie but only ever owned 2 diesels & both have been T2's but in all fairness you have also given misinformation in another post suggesting people add kerosene to their fuel which is illegal in the UK:doh
 
I'm glad to say before I had chance to ring the garage, the mechanic rang me to say he had made a mistake and it wasn't the pump. His diagnostic machines aren't showing up anything and there are no warning lights on the car, so he is taking the wheels off one by one looking for rusty bits. (He went in to more detail but I didn't understand, me being female). Unfortunately, I may have to take it to Nissan for them to diagnose. I hate going there. PS. The handbrake was fine when he'd done it but this problem did start after that had been done.
 
must say it does sound a bit like they do not understand the car, do you have abs? trouble with so called fitters today is if the car cannot tell what is wrong they are lost:doh, Rick
 
It does have abs and the mechanic said that the abs was kicking in far sooner than it should do so I was getting that grabbing feeling even when braking gently. He couldn't find anything after taking the wheels off again but when he test ran it, he said it felt different from when he'd driven it prior to taking them off. I fetched it back and have run it over the weekend and it seems fine now. Although I don't know much about cars I can tell when something is wrong and do keep on top of all the routine checks. I must admit I am not looking forward to towing the horses as 2.5t takes a bit of stopping.

I had a similar problem with the abs kicking in like you say under very gentle braking.
Mine turned out to be a cracked ABS ring on the front passenger side.
I wasn't getting an abs fault light come up on the dash so it took a while to find the cause.
 
So is it not the vacuum pump after all.

Might be worth paying out for the nissan diagnostics machine, so far I've not found anyone with an aftermarket diagnostics machine that will diagnose brakes. My nearside front sensor has caused problems several times on my older truck over the years. It has always been the wires that have broken so far, think they had broken previously and had a bad repair which let water into the wires and rotted them out.
