Brake Drum differences

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but all the pictures in here relate...

Firstly, do those of you with these bigger brakes find they tend to wear one shoe a lot more than the other... eg. both sides on mine has probably about 7mm on the front, but only 2mm on the rear shoe, which is the one the hand brake is connected to.

Secondly, what is the trick with these ones? with the adjusted not being fixed to the shoe, I can't seem to find a way to get the top spring on with out everything flying in all directions.
 
I can't remember exactly but it was very fiddly. I seem to remember putting on the shoes with the bottom spring in place and then getting the retaining pins/springs in hoping they'll hold it all in place but it was still awkward.
I think someone on here used cable ties around the shoes to hold them while putting the adjuster and springs in.

I did like you, and used a sash clamp to keep them in place... then spent the best part of an hour trying to get the top spring on, between chasing the spring across the drive, and trying to find where the adjuster had flown to, it was hopeless.

I wonder if there is a special tool to put the spring on.

Do you find the shoes wear unevenly?
 
I had uneven wear but realized when I took the new ones out of the box, they were uneven too?
By uneven I mean one shoe thicker than the other, not thicker one end of a shoe to the other end.
 
I assemble the top spring and adjuster assembly and fold them over the slave cylinder with the bottoms of the shoes wide open then once in place fold the bottoms together and fit the bottom spring then fit the front shoe to the anchor and a pair of grips to fit the rear shoe, then the retaining springs, make sure of course before you start that adjuster is fully in, Rick

That's how I do the brakes on my T2, which have the smaller brakes, and the adjuster ratchet lever is actually fitted to the brake shoe, but on these ones the ratchet is not attached, so will not stay put.

This is how I did mine few weeks ago. Also used mole grips to put bottom spring on to stop it flying across the county.. Again the later ones have one of the shoes with alot less meat and thats the one that wares out first.
