i think the Glow plugs are different yes, so worth checking, and the MAF worht a clean but it wont affect starting. Here a thought, is the CKP sensor ok? if it isnt, you will certainly get starting issues. worth removing it and giving a clean to start with...

That must be the sensor on the top of the gearbox...............if it is then i cleaned it before putting the engine back in.

All sorted now after a few headscratching few days.
When I rebuilt the engine I had fitted the pump gearwheel from the original ZEXEL injector pump to the BOSCH injector pump by mistake instead of using the original gearwheel from the BOSCH pump. The ZEXEL gearwheel fits the BOSCH pump and all timing marks look pretty much in the same place but under closer inspection today when I took it off the timing marks are a few teeth over on the BOSCH timing gear which meant that put my timing way out with the ZEXEL gear wheel fitted  which is why I just couldn't get a reading using my dial indicator to set the pump up.

Set the pump within minutes of fitting the correct gearwheel and she now starts on the key with now smoke and idles perfectly now.
How glad am I now :thumbs
