Fungal infestation can 'spoil' the fuel and the sludge and residue is drawn into the engine, quickly clogging filters, causing loss of power, narrowing fuel lines and eventually leading to engine breakdown. The damage does not stop there. A portion of sludge adheres to the inner walls of the tank and fuel lines producing corrosive hydrogen sulphide that causes metal defects and pitting of the injectors and fuel related components.

sounds a bit like the human body, high cholesterol, narrowing of arteries,

Yes it is, but it needs to be taken seriously, if you have it, it is a right bastard to get rid of, if it has got as far as filters then the tank needs to be removed and manually cleaned, the biocide stuff is not that effective, look at the links that briggie has posted, it is fairly rare on road going motors but once it gets established it will be a tough job to get rid of it, on narrow boats it was a case of removing the fuel tanks and steam cleaning them, and even then the stuff was in the fuel lines and can migrate back to the tank and start all over again, Rick

That sounds like classic diesel bug symtoms to me.

We come across it on a weekly basis on narrowboats (that's what i work on for a living)

It grows when water is present in the diesel.

Give your system a good dose of one of the several chemicals available from most Chandlery stores (inland and coastal) and that should cure it.

We use 'Fuel Set' on a regular basis with good results

Envious of your job Mr Speedy :thumb2

Had a narrow boat for 6 years, spent 7 months of each year on it, cruised most of the system including a whole year on the Lancaster Canal, did the River Trent And the Thames, center arch Tower Bridge, had three Xmass's on the boat lovely days, but things change, but never caught the derv bug almost always used our own derv , got large tank here, Rick

I am having a bit of a problem with my injectors on my Terrano (mk1) .Found like a sludge in the filter ,which i have replaced , Also drained the fuel tank loads of muck came out , I then cracked the injectors after re filling filter and a load of muck again came out of them , After leaving them undone and blowing them out i tried firing it up ,It started and then ran very lumpy i have cracked the injectors one by one whilst the car is running ,It still has a slight miss now and again but seems to have its power , Sorry to go on but i am at my wits end can i buy a product to add that will help or do i just keep cracking the injectors one by one again hoping it blows out , Thanks Paul if i was not waiting for a hip replacement i would be taking the pump and all of Any help will be much appreciated

Probably if the gunge has got past the main filter, then the mini filter could be partly blocked, and letting some bits past.
Plenty of info on this and how to clean (If fitted).

If you have started to use more bio fuel, and most diesel now contains some  then this will clean out some of the muck in the fuel lines.
Go to the smallest restriction, which is your injectors.

I run some injector cleaner though my mav every 5th or 6th fill up.

There is a cleaner that you put straight into the fuel filter and this cleans out the system, never used it so hope someone who has can advise.

The injector cleaner can i buy it at Halfords also does it go into the fuel tank .I used redex years ago in my old escort van made it smoke a bit for a while lol

The tank is exactly where its supposed to go....but don't think it will affect the sludge in there.....the obvious starting point if you weren't a bit crocked would be to drop/drain/flush the tank so at least the rest of the problems will be downstream.

As has been said, bio-diesel (not veg oil) can strip the fuel system of all the crud thats built up over the years so it ends up in the filter usually (its a one-off, once cleaned its fine), but I can't see small mixes (its max 10-15% in the UK I think) causing such a drastic problem.....equally possible it was a dodgy batch of diesel or an adverse reaction from an (incorrect?) additive?

I also do not have a clue what the previous owner run it on , I notice a slight power difference when i use Tesco diesel , The last time i filled up was at Tesco . When i did crack the injectors it came out all frothy at first iam wondering because the tank got a bit low i might of sucked up some water or something from the tank , i did notice some water in the old filter when i drained it

These trucks don't like being sat around or underused either.

Next time you fancy a day out, have the tank as low as possible then fill up with BP Ultimate Diesel or one of the other equivalents and take her for a good long blast up the motorway....:thumb2

havin had probs with my maverick removed diesel filter was caked up in black slimey stuff bit like wet silicon put new filter on still no better replaced injectors still no better so put new diesel pump on now perfect so thought i would have a look in my old pump removed the top only to see the same caked inside pump black slimey stuff i reckon good clean and blow out old pump will be ok but the question is hows it got there when theres a diesel filter on and wot is the black slimey stuff any ideas ?????????

That's diesel bug............ at the extreme end of its' process. I rarely see it in cars, I work on boat engines a lot tho and see this very often.
I'd recommend that a shot of Startron be used directly into the tank.

Have a look at this.............. I used it on my boat and the difference was prolific, revamped a whole tank of diesel.

Hello Mr O...long time no see:thumb2

I'm assuming that boats are more vulnerable because of low usage?

super m fuel

Hi turbo technics of northampton say that s/m fuel wrecks more turbos than any thing,i 4 1 am going to use leading brand fuel in my t2 2.7 any thoughts on this more than welcome.:thumbs:eek:

I suspect turbo technics are talking out of their backside frankly.

Loads of unsupported horror stories around of course, usually friend of a friend, and the very occasional media story of a batch of contaminated fuel....that can happen anywhere.

But as at least one member on here can confirm (because he drives a tanker) and I've heard often elsewhere, all the petrol retailers get their fuel from the same refineries....so this kind of story is invariably just a load of the stuff that makes the grass grow in Texas.

In fact Tescos 99RON fuel (that I have run my Z4 on for ages) recently came out tops in a comparitive test between major brands of premium fuel.

I thought they all got it from the same refineries? :lol

not often anyone gets 'one up' on Paul :thumbs
I don't think they have, everyone knows the additives are put in during loading. Bit like concrete, all goes into the same truck but the additives can be changed/added/increased during loading. Explains why your different concrete mixes to the same site can be delivered in the same truck (not at the same obviously).

Liam, at least let us have a moment to gloat :doh

I always buy the cheapest diesel i can find which is SM I've never tried any of this go-faster stuff, I don't believe a word of it :thumb2
