OK guys I’ll hold my hands up and admit that I’ve been out and worried myself. Been stuck inside all day until my shift finished at 8 o’clock tonight. Decided I’d take the project truck out to get it warmed through as it hasn’t moved since Tuesday night.
Took it up a hill into a rural area and found snow blowing across the road in places and carried on. Got to the top of the hill and ran along a mile long stretch of level road with snow blowing across in places. So used the snow flake switch for the autobox. Then on the fly tried 4h and all I got was a wherring gear noise so pulled up and put into neutral and was able to go 2 and 4without problem. Set off in 4h un nerved really but flicked in and out of 4wd without problems. Came up to a left turn to take me back down into town. Snow had really blown here and I could see the two tyre tracks and then level snow where people had dragged the bottoms of their cars and this was about a foot deep. So felt the car slowing down and gently eased on the gas to gain momentum and got through but being un nerved it really played with my head.

So anyone else had similar noise from transferbox, bare in mind that I have used it a little recently like manuevering on the camp site at the weekend.

I guess I just need to drive it and gain confidence but have to say not used the auto properly in 4wd before so maybe I was driving wrong.

Then my money is on your Autos were not locking in due to initial frost stuck, Rick

Certainly sounds plausible Rick. I think I need to use the 4wd system more and gain confidence. I was cursing that young girl that wrote off my old truck. I new where I was with that truck, manual hubs and it just did everything.

Yep you need to use it more Jim, lets arrange a laning trip :thumb2

Mines fixed hubs but I was changing between 2 and 4 high up to about 20mph without problems. That's after selecting neutral first though. Well I have a squeak squeak squeak from the front when in 4h:lol :thumb2
I will fit manual hubs when I get round to it. :thumb2

It's a five minute job to convert the autos to freewheeling manuals.
I was ready to buy some AVMs but saw a thread on an Aussie site.
My converted ones are still going well..:thumb2
I've got the info if interested.

Jim, to be honest I'm going through a learning curve with my manual Patrol.
It's an entirely different animal to my old auto Pajero. The snow just adds another lesson.

Terrano auto hubs aren't like Trol auto hubs so can't be converted.

Blocky, with locked or fixed hubs you can change into 4H on the move at up to 40mph, don't need to select neutral first, just move the transfer lever. You only need to select neutral for 4L :thumb2

Yeah I was fine with my old truck, manual gearbox and after I’d fitted manual hubs simply because the brake rings kept snapping. Once converted to manual hubs it was great as said change to 2 and 4h on the fly no problem.
If these auto hubs do cause me problems in the future I have a set of fixed in the garage so they’ll be getting stuck on as they’re cheaper than manual hubs.

I have no problems in my auto going to 4H and back while on the move.
Only need to put it in neutral to select 4L like Rob says.

Perfect Rob. I knew you had to use neutral for one of them. :thumb2

i would say if on move, then ease off on throttle, so you know all wheels are
turning at same speed, ie you're not spinning the rears more.

don't forget if on autos don't need to reverse every time come out of 4wd, as
better leave hubs locked for next time.

tbh like idiot proof fixed hubs, one less thing to worry about.

I got asked on Wednesday if I wanted to go up Holmemoss laning in the snow but I was on shift until 8 so couldn’t go. The bloke posted some pics and it looked ace but his truck is modded and mine ain’t.

Terranos don't need modding for normal laning, Rick mags did the strata florida and the bastard lane in his standardd truck and it was full of tools and dogs :lol
