I've been having some battery issues lately. Packed in just before christamas, got recovery guy out and he jumped it then it died the next day. Went to halfords and bought a new battery and a multimeter. Tested one battery at 12.1 and the other at 12.0 so replaced the lower one and everything was fine. Then over the last few days its been struggling and this morning just packed in. So I tested them again, the same one at 12.1 as last time but the halfords one was 11.7. Its guaranteed so I can get another for free but is there a possibilty its soemthing other than the cold weather and a crappy battery? What batteries are the best?

Measure the voltage at the battery when the engine is running. As the alternator could be broken. If it's working it should read a voltage of about 14v.

Ok, I didn't know that. Thanks. Once I get it started I will. Can anyone suggest a good battery, or two as mine has two for some reason?

Have a look here m8

I bought one for my Mav from the Glasgow store last month...it wasn't cheap at over £90 but its a Bosch and seems to be spot on..They do cheaper batteries for Terranos...depends on battery post layout.

Your batteries are probably fine, But if the alternator is not charging them they will have no charge in them.

When my starter went it gave the same symptons of a flat battery and have heard of others with the same issue.

well, got it sorted, called out the home recovery guys off my insurance and he jumped it then tightened the alternator cable which was loose, problem solved. Ran the car for half hour and went to halfords, they checked the battery and said it was ok, so didn't replace it but I'm running fine now.
Still might think about replacing them with better batteries, so still open to suggestions on that front. Thanks for your advice guys.

I experienced the same problems with mine when I first brought it, including low voltage. Turns out my battery terminals fell to pieces so replaced them and replaced the battery and all is well.

You checked the connectors? Or especially the large cabling going into them?

In terms of the better battery I would recommend the Varta high performance batteries, you can get one for about £90 for the Terrano brand new. Thats the one I brought and also the one my Mrs dad has in his.

I know its sickening but its also the one the land rover spares company my Mrs works for recommends for the landies.

Standard, Calcium or Silver?
How batteries work

You can choose from our Standard, Calcium or Silver ranges. Please read carefully below before choosing.
Standard Batteries (HB) Range

These are our lowest prices batteries. They come fully charged, and ready to fit, and with a 3 year guarrantee they are an excellent choice if you want a high quality but economical battery.
Calcium Batteries (HCB) Range

Our calcium batteries are ideal if you want extra power and durability. We recommend these batteries for vehicles with additional in-car accessories such as sat nav, DVD players, electric coolboxes and so on which all have a draining effect on the battery. Also if your car has to cope with extra pressures, for example: stopping and starting each day in heavy traffic, towing a caravan, standing outside at night, then you may prefer a calcium battery.

There are a number of extra features:

* 4 year warranty.
* Calcium technology.
* 30% more starting power than a standard battery.
* Higher resistance to overcharge.
* Higher resistance to high under-bonnet temperature.

Bosch Silver Batteries (HSB) Range

Bosch Silver Batteries are top of the range and thanks to their Powerframe technology they offer:

* Up to 45% more starting power than a standard battery.
* Up to 30% longer life.
* Faster re-charge acceptance.
* 5 year warranty.

ah i seem to have pasted to much, but did you read a bout the 3 batteries they do, Calcium Batteries, bosch silver, could be the way to go, :thumbs

Why can't a standard battery cope with the same as a Calcium? a standard battery can't cope with being left outside overnight then? never mind a sat nav:lol
