Battery revival ?

Your best chance with this battery is to use an 'intelligent' type charger (Aldi & Lidle do them for about £14) & leave it connected for several days (the longer the better) to de-sulphate the plates. If the voltage has dropped below about 10V it may be necessary to connect to another good battery for a while or use an old 'stupid' (LOL) type charger with a 12v low wattage bulb in series (don't know why...just do it!) to raise the voltage first.

You are unlikely to get anywhere near 100% original capacity but it's worth a try if only for the experience LOL.

Best of luck!

Just read rustic @ 18, he just about covers it all.

Thanks all, I had pretty much come to the conclusion it was goosed anyway. I'd heard some old pub talk of "flashing" the battery with a quick zap of mains  I wonder if that's the shock treatment reqd to de sulphate the plates :nenau
Also , what is Mgso4 ? Many a google answer suggesting putting that in your dead battery :augie

mains?

Might be safer to use a welder for that quick shock. I know you can revive nicd batteries like that. Did it with my mig last time.

Good point, and the welder is out at the mo so I'll give it some amps :naughty

Pub talk... hmm.. Mains is 50 hz, these desulphation units work in Khz
Forget that one.
There has also been some talk of flashing rechargeable batteries with the output from a welder too.

So what's the worst that can happen under these circumstances?:nenau

Battery explodes spraying hot sulphuric acid and possible molten metal everywhere, maybe hydrogen sulphide gas, maybe even a fire.

So if you even think about trying this sort of experiment, then you need to be well away from the battery in question, using a splat box, or screen, and have a remote switch, a fire extinguisher and eye and full body protection, or better still, just buy a new battery.

But there is that part in us that wants to try something like this.:naughty
Just be aware of the risks, and take all reasonable precautions, and check your insurance policies.

I have a Ctek charger and it's bought many a dead flat battery back to life. The battery on my Terry has an 05 stamp on it, so I think it may be the original. It will go flat if I don't use the truck for a few weeks when cold or do lots of small journeys, but it will come back to good health after a couple of days with my Ctek :)

Funnily enough I found my Ctek this afternoon :D So instead of blowing myself up I plugged that in instead. So far so good, it's charging away and reports "Low Charge" on battery. The battery also now has a bit of a green glow in the condition window :thumbs
Experiment continues

You can buy tablets on Ebay! that will revive a dead battery, but i believe aspirin have a similar effect!

wonder how long it will hold that charge though , I suspect the cca will have suffered too

I find that as long as I use the truck once a week when charged, it holds up, even when the outside temperature is very cold. I once charged a battery from my mums old Renault, this was totally flat, even after a bump start and a good 20 mile run up and down a motorway, it just clicked after I had stopped the engine, so I fitted another spare battery and took the flat one home for a slow charge on my Ctek....I still have and use that battery on my GT6.

You can buy all sorts of tablets on ebay that will just about revive anything.:lol

Epson salts have been used too.
This sort of fix might just last till pay day...
BUT on the first frosty cold start... no chance.

Get yourself one of these :thumb2

Free delivery for forum members last time I asked as I went in and tried to stir up some discount

That's what I have :thumbs
I'm under no illusions chaps regarding any recovery at all. Just interested to see what was available from the forum' collective font of knowledge

I've googled a lot over the weekend and some of that was to do with pills :lol

I have used a pulse de sulphation device with some success on a 12 volt traction battery, what happened was I did not have the correct charger for this battery, as it needed 15.2 volts to get to full gassing stage, and I could see the pos plates were well sulphated, and this battery was only 2 years old with an expected life of 15 plus years being regularly discharges to 80% of capacity, so 480 usable = 8 days of keeping my fridge going, £800 worth 600 amp hours 210 Kg so needed to sort it, managed to find a charger and 18 months down the line I have nice chocolate brown plates and full capacity, but did need lots of TLC and monitoring, takes 5Lt water at a time, this by the way is the smaller battery the other is 880 Ah at 24 volt so 1776 Ah at 12 volt but easier to charge as top voltage is 29.6 all down to different lead composition less or more Antimony, Rick

Ah, well now then :augie It's been on and off all week. Volts are up to 12.8 ish but not holding anything worth having. So have put it under load last night and tonight.
Will see what it has tomorrow before I weigh it in :lol

If the system you have is working it will take months to de sulphate a battery, well my traction lump did any way, but it did work but as said before my plates are around 10mm thick yours at best are 2mm Rick
