Great vids, just checked tide tables and another few days and there would have been another 2 foot of water in there so you hit it about right, enough wtaer but not too much.

hi

is this averton gifford on the a379 in devon then, as my autoroute
suggests.

cant believe havent been there, love devon, will put it on my list
for next time...

h all .
pleased you all enjoyed the video.

yes its the A379

well worth a drive if you get the chance ,but drive it first before high tide as its a little difficult to judge where the road is .
there is one stretch between the posts that dips down so goes a bit deeper than you expect. I pulled the air filter out when I got to the other side filter was dry but a little water had got in through the drain holes.
(splashed up) water was above the Discos number plate.
I entered the water quite slowly in first gear high range and found it quite hard to accelerate enough to get the bow wave pushing forward.
although I think it was a bit shallow for a bow wave to form.
so if anyone tries it 3rd in low box I think would be about right.
keep the revs up a bit.
Disco now a lot cleaner underneath :p
and as Simon said check the tide tables .L.R.I. mag drove it in a defender last Xmas and water was over the bonnet and splashing onto the roof.
good job it had a snorkel .
at the end of the high tide video we stopped short of the last bit and gave the dogs a swim they loved it till the collie decided to follow the feeder stream which suddenly went to 4ft deep had to pull her out as she couldn't get out and the daft thing wouldn't swim back into the shallows.
who said collies are smart.
anyway got a couple more short videos of a couple of lanes we did will get then posted tomorrow.

JIM WROTE "Get all that salt washed off quick though".

dont worry jim about the salt its a Disco so wont be around long enough to corrode away .

RUST WILL BEAT IT TO IT.

presume the 3rd low bit more approipriate to a disco's full time
box using low without the centre diff locked.

in a t2 or other part time 4wd the road beneath the water
will be a solid surface so prone to wind up, or do you think
worth risk as more sure footed still. or is there a good chance
of wheel slip during the swim.

Hi rbrt I suffered bad wind up in 2ft deep flood water last week to the point you could'nt steer but once going back into 2WD it was fine

Never really noticed wind up in deep water even wen driving round flooded estates in last years floods fr long periods, Might be a benefit of having mud tyres on and them not gripping so well on tarmac with the knobbles "walking" and at times I was probably close to floating which would have helped too

hi rbrt.
main worry is stalling due to low engine speed in 1st high .

when i entered the river at low speed i found it very difficult to increase revs and push my way through the river .thinking if it looks to deep i could always reverse out ,hence slowly slowly.
imagine what it feels like to walk through at that depth ,
now think of the resistance of a truck in the same water.
hence 3rd low
i would rather risk a bit of wind up than a drowned engine.
if wind up does occure just rocking the steering wheel a bit should help the wheels to uwind.

Ian, with a disco, any other late solihull product, you have full time 4wd
in high and low, so can use low3 without wind up providing centre diff
remains in 'road' unlock.

agree would want more revs for peace of mind. reason pointed out as
bulk of owners here with terranos etc would be locked in 4wd to get low
with obvious risk of wind up.

(zippy wind up is where front wheels dont turn at same speed as rear
and cause stress to drive train - normally resolved either by a wheel
slipping as per hummingbirds thought of 'walking' or something breaking
ie the brake ring(s) in the auto hubs. in pure off road situations there
will be sufficient loss of traction and wheel spin to cancel this wind up
basically any motion where you did not move in an exact straight line)

my concern was that Ian was on a surfaced road beneath the water
and therefore the tyres were getting high grip still.

one way out of this in front auto hub vehicles would be to change to
manual hubs, then with care use low box but not lock hubs. drive
would go to rear wheels as normal and down to front hubs but not
drive front wheels.
care would still be needed though as
there would be double the torque being produced and only going to
rear axle but providing applied smoothly unlikely to cause breakage.

2wd low is something ive considered as an aid to shunting a heavy
trailer. another way but more complicated would require a change to
the transfer box selector basically a new lever for 4wd with existing
just for hi/low selection or vice versa.

After all the time I've lived down this neck of the woods, and I still haven't been to Averton Gifford. :doh

Must try harder...

Lee.
