freewheel hub problem

I have an N reg. diesel Maverick which developed alternate banging and scraping noises,in the n/s front wheel. This was cured, temporarilly,by removing the auto freewheel hub.I obtained a pair of s/h hubs and fitted one to the n/s,it was just as bad.I then followed the advice given in this forum, and checked the o/s.The driveshaft turned with the wheel and on dismantling,I found it to be badly worn.Replacing this has ,so far, fixed the problem......Thankyou.

Hi guys, thought i would post in this thread save making a new one!!

Right have took both front hubs of this morning and from looking at the blown up diagram from the workshop manual i don't even have ''Brake A'' pieces on either side. I removed the hub housing and was left with ''snap ring'' (circlip), ''washer B'', ''washer A'' and ''Brake B'' on the shaft.

Should ''Brake A'' be a seprate part on the shaft or is it within the hub housing?

I'm sorry about another auto hub question but this is crazing me!

Many many thanks for any advice!

You shouldn't get any noise from anywhere in the transmission except the free wheeling hubs unless something is seriously wrong. Even the hubs shouldn't make anything more than a click as they lock and unlock, but if yours is doing what mine did the hub will not quite be engaging and it will sound like a ratchet, which it sort of is. When you stripped the hubs did you see the dogs (outward facing teet) on the end of the inner sprung loaded locker, these engage with similar teeth in the end of the housing. If they're not quite in thy make quite a noise as they rub on each other - a bit like a gear grating as it goes in if the syncros are worn on your box only continuous.

It took me ages to figure it out and I thought it was the side making the noise too, honestly go and have a look at the other side, it won't cost you anything to look after all. just jack that wheel up and turn it and see if the shaft turns, if it does it locked in still if it doesn't then you've eliminated that as a cause of the noise.

Just how much damage are you doing while the noise is happening?
