I may be replacing my truck (T2) for a newer version sometime soon and I really fancy getting an automatic - as I'm an idle fecker and it's two things less to do while driving... :D

Does anyone on here own, or previously owned an automatic Terrano? If so, what do you think? Any mark or years better than others? Anything to look out for or avoid?

Cheers. :)

if an auto Terrano exists please tell me as I know of none, Mistral imports are the only autos that I know of, Rick

erm my T2 is an auto

well all I can say is if you look up on the data bases re T2 auto is not listed I wanted oil for Briggies box so called into local factors, T2 is not listed as auto nor is Ford Mav, and Mistral as an import is not listed either, my original handbook does not mention "AUTO" so you tell me as I dono, Rick

well my fellow yorkie , i am the proud owner of 2 mistrals .... the imported version of the terrano .... both are auto , and i love them to bits , very different to drive than a standard auto , but once you get used to them ... they are a real pleasure to drive .

well when i say i am the owner of 2 ...... i got one , and sheila has got one lol

just keep your eye of fluid levels / colour of fluid etc .. service regularly , and you should be ok :thumb2

both my handbooks list auto. loads for sale on ebay

mine is auto and for sale . nice truck but i need a small car or van for work
i want 800 quid or a swap

Well worth having - I've owned two, a 99-plate and an 02-plate.

Fuel economy is as good as or better than the manual because it turns over more slowly....where the manual is doing around 3800rpm at 90mph the auto is doing only 3000 rpm....or 2000rpm at 60.

Just make sure gear changes are smooth and theres no hesitation and it should be fine.

auto

My one is an auto (mistral) anybody can tell me at what rev the gear are changing ?

When I push down on third gear, it goes at 4000 and get stuck for a while until I release the gas and push the pedal again. Is that weird or everybody with auto are the same ?

top speed around 140k/h

mines an auto and i find it changes gears better if i drop the revs a bit between changes

think you will find if you push fast on the gas pedal it automaticly switches to sport mode. and wont change gear till 4000 rpm . if you watch the sport/ at/ ice button it will light up the sport even when not switched to sport.

if you give it all the beans but slowly it will not switch itself over and change as normal .

was the same on my r3m so i assume it will be the same on misteral

used to do it on my nissan zx too

i think volvo's and alike have a drop down button on the shift. for similar fast acceleration for overtaking

my tdi will do 100 all day long on the motorway.... if i could afford the fuel :(. tested with sat nav:naughty

just quickly lift your foot off the loud pedal if you wish to change up a gear quickly :thumb2

Not sure that the Mistral autobox is the same as the later Terrano version but they often display a reluctance to change into top gear...but 4000rpm is fecking high, thats almost into the rev limiter.

I'm assuming (i) you've got overdrive, and (ii) its switched on (no warning light illuminated)?

The reluctance to change into top gear is sometimes associated with cold running....Timbo will tell you the exact details, but it would be better when warmed up if thats the issue. Theres also a solenoid that can misbehave and cause the problem, but autoboxes are horrendously complex and the advice I've always had from the best auto engineers is "wait til something breaks" , because you'll spend a fortune trying to diagnose a fault and often still need the box swapped or reconditioned. I've found that to be good advice TBH.

Problem with these things is, unlike a manual box, which can be had reconditioned for around £500-600, you either face a bill for around £1500 to have an autobox rebuilt, or using a s/h one of unknown pedigree.....and look where thats got Briggie - 12 months down the line and its bolloxed.

As Extreme says, when you floor the pedal quickly it implements 'kickdown' and drops the thing a gear, so conversely, if you ease off a bit it can help it change up, especially with that last cog.

But I'm struggling to understand exactly what you mean by "push down on third gear"??? Can you expand a bit?

im assuming he means the d or drive position ... ie .... not 1st or 2nd
