as title really an one on here got an android phone and is running google maps as a sat nav?

surely if you use google maps you will need to be constantly connected to the internet?

Or just use sat nav like Garmin on your phone. Much quicker and you need no signal or mast proxi what not:augie
Kind of handy when lost in the woods:lol

Unless you have tom tom and it helpfully says "you are off a recognised road" :doh:doh:doh

I agree with you about getting a sat nav rather than using aphone. My vodaphone, supposed sat nav, is more like something from ten years back.

Just bought a new Garmin 1410 , on offer from Halfords, muts bits :thumb2

On the Garmin you can put it in "off road" mode so it will still get you back where you came from for example. Also walking mode, handy for finding the right venue in town:D
Garmin's background of marine sat nav etc is a bonus I think:thumbs

mobile phones never work in wales. I wouldnt like my navigation to rely on it.

Exactomondo :thumbs hence the mobile garmin xt :D
As long as it's got 3 satallites :augie price of scrap's so high at the mo, those Newport boys may nick the satallites next :lol

right so does anyone actually have an android with google maps ?

the reason for the question is due to memory maps no being available for the android

with the ability to plot on google earth i was woundering if the nav version would use a gpx file to run an overlay

nope,

got htc touch hd with 8gb mem card. on windows, not 7 an earlier mobile windows

managed to get entire uk os on to card and prog, starts to run prog then fails.

mind screen at 4"/10cm too small in truck.

did manage to create various point of interest on my old tomtom.

think really need a 7+ inch screen maybe a net book 10" would be nice velcro'ed
to dash.

i have found the binatone unit an ok size to navigate

i think i have managed to use a mmo overlay to plot a trip on tomtom using a tomtom poi plotter but it dont find some of the lanes and says that their is no such road

i find the phone screen on my mda an ok size but is a little small to plot quickly the next turn :doh

another option is some of these cheap ish ice head units, with 7" screen, many
aren't motorised though frankly one less thing to go wrong...

in single and doulb din size units. typically come with some unknown street
mapping system but many will take tomtom memory card for maps.

some are windows driven so might then get memory map to run.

tempted but just put my cb in spare partt of double din, and my current head
unit is fine.

think out in the country still prefer a good old fold up map, marked up, and a
compass.

You can always default to this one.....? :lol

And no, Lou Reed's original was bloody awful :doh

what about a tablet running windows xp?

indeed, though keyboard might be useful, still touch screen on tablet.

what about an ipad or one of these clone things. typically around 7" size.
suspect their solid state memory will survive the bumps better and if not
on ciggy adaptor the unit's battery will last longer.
