Yes, I don't think it is a good idea to mix, but as Alex's is now black, I would expect him to flush the system and start again...

My old one had green in this one has blue, which one is best no idea:lol:doh one thing I like about green is that it's easy to spot if you get a leak . keep clear of the OAT stuff can react & eat your engine:doh

I have always been advised Green and that's all I've ever used.

I have been told by a few members in the past that the Glycol levels in the green protect these engines better regardless of their age as they haven't really changed much since they were first produced.

I've spoken to a few black cabs as well as they run this engine non intercooled and they seem to generally agree that it's green however one did say he used Blue

I cant honestly remember but I have a feeling my coolant has dropped as it is marked on minimum when cold, I'm sure it used to be on max, I'll have to keep my eye on it

We have loads of blue here (almost on tap) and would not cost me a penny :thumb2

lastly how many litres of coolant should I expect to need?

i know 50/50 water to coolant mix

Just keep mixing up jugs of 50:50 until system is full. Keep some for future top ups :thumb2

I would drain the system, then put 5 litres of neat antifreeze in first, then top up with water. :thumb2
The cooling system is approximately 10 litres but you'll be lucky to drain that much out.

This is what I did..
Drop the antifreeze out via bottom hose, assume the drain point on the engine block doesn't loosen...or shears off...
Refill with fresh water, run engine
drain again...
Do this several times..

This will give you a clue as to how much old stuff is in there per change, assuming only 50% comes out each time.
1st flush 50% left
2nd flush 25% left
3rd flush 12 % left
4th flush 6% left....


So on your last fill, only put in concentrated antifreeze, as you will only get 5 litres in, the remainder will be fairly clean water. So that should then give you a 50 % mix. :thumb2

As Rick says, filtered rain water would be good for flushing...:thumb2

I think actually we have distilled water (for an OCD customer who paid a recent visit here)
