Just to add to what has been posted, if you have a good look on your local/county concils web site there is often a section regaurding the rights of way in that area:thumb2Northumberlands is quite good once you get the hang of it:thumbs but if all else fails & you have a certain lane/s in mind give the council a call/vist to make sure you are allowed on said lane/s then if someone states your not you then have proof you are allowed:thumbs

but we all know powys council dont like 4x4's it ruins there mountain bike visit wales thing.... it stops them changing use etc.

is there anyone out there with the balls to say to these councils "no its a road its always been a road and you aint allowed to change its use just cos it suits you ". why does everyone pussy foot around

im going to powys council this week and neath i will visit the council and police and ask for the info

i recon i should introduce them to Mr extremely annoying

i fail to see how a council can change its mind on a status of a road. its our road we paid for it for all the years before they close them.

There were 2 Way-finders, one the original was run by Glass. The second one was used by CRAG. Both the same program and almost identical. Both were awkward to use and understand, not very user friendly you'd say.

GLASS introduced TrailWise as a replacement for Way-finder. It is far superior nad easier to use. Since its launch CRAG have been given/granted a 'key' for Trailwise so that CRAG members can access it.

Prior to CRAG getting access and prior to my joining the CRAG exec I was asked to do a write up for the exec so they could decide whether it was worth getting.

If you let me have your email address I'll post a copy of my write up to you and you'll see its many features.

Well it's taken nearly 24 hours to get this far. I still dont know when a road isnt a road and it seems there are even more "bodies" about than Brown's stealth taxes.
It "seems" that even if one was to join one of these groups they will still keep one out of the inner circle of secret legal lanes!
On recent green lane outings, the forest like lanes have got big gates on them baring access. Some have lift up jobbies and have council type signs with pretty pics of cars with a red line through it for example.While others are just a dirt road off the main road!
Team Wales, why dont we bung in a few squid each and then get the special code to open the safe of legal tracks?

ok ill put my share in towards being a member,
but i got to say i dont think its worth it , it all seems too secretive to me or useless info from the one i joined.

the info i saw was dated and or inconclusive usually followed by check with local highways agency bla bla bla

i can do that without joining a club... but at the end of the day would i not go there . depends on whos looking. plates are always covered anyway now


its not sold to me yet. but hey lets see.... im prepared to sponsor team wales my share for a punt

Makeitfit, there are no secret lanes. Simple as. All lanes that your council are responsible for with public vehicular rights of way are recorded and can be viewed at your local authority offices either with the ROW or highways offices. If you take your os map with you when you go you can copy the details onto your map.
It might sound like a waste of time joining any groups local or otherwise but we all ahve to start somewhere if as I said earlier we want to be educated in the legal use of 'greenlanes'.
Other than that then ask on here and other forums when you're planning to go laning and I and I'm sure others will do their best to help.

As an example another thread talked of a weekends laning and police operations over that weekend in Wales. I've asked the question elsewhere and know that there are police operations ongoing throughout mid wales and there will be a special effort by the police in North Wales over easter wkend.

- ooh 2 (CRAG and GLASS) has the British education system really fallen down so far that 2 is a big number.

As for what is legal its been stated more than once - BOATS are legal, most ORPAs are too anything else most likely isn't unless you know a good reason why it is.

Not true at all - you will have the same access as the rest of us - I spent about 5hrs researching the lanes i did last Sunday, I do this everytime I go out somewhere new and even when returning to somewhere I've been before, because unless its on my patch (Central North Yorks) I may not know that something has changed and things do quite regularly in some areas.


You all seem to want everything handed to you on a plate - if you want that buy Total Off Road magazine and follow their routes or other mags too. Otherwise contact the local rights of way department and go and have a look at the definitive map - that is the only way to truely find ot what is what - don't blame the 4x4 community, is just the way British Rights of way law works.

Mr trex please , I have struggled through this thread of late.
The bodies ARE confusing, it's alright for you as you're obviously well into the scene and have had time to take it all in.
I'll thank you not to dis the welsh special education!
I dont expect stuff on a plate, just a simple way of understanding all these "Titles" shall we say.
The inner circle thing stems from this statement earlier from nejones

Ok what I should have asked is did you send £1 to Terra so that you could bget affiliation to Glass through Nissan 4x4 owners club.

If you did then you'd have been able to access Wayfinder. When Glass were ready to release TrailWise they gave those using the old Wayfinder system temporary free use of TW. Thats how I came to be using it before CRAG got the 'key' to it.
I'm sure Si, Terra will be more knowledgable on this though.
