i am a welder and you can weld ss to mild on a mig piece of piss...with normal wire

Learning all the time, I mainly stick weld and have a nice oil cooled welder that will go all day at high power but then I do not do much these days, nice to know about the ss to steel with the mig though, thanks, Rick

Bally hell that stuff is far too heavy, and it is galvanized, no god for welding unless you wish to gas yourself, I think arsenic is produced but could be wrong, no all you need is the same thickness plate for free as off cuts from your local sheet metal guy, usually they will let you rumage in their skip, no good painting the inside before you weld the weld heat just kills the paint, inject waxoil after, Rick

think its cyanide but might be wrong as well:nenau

there wont be a problem welding but forming will be harder but i also got a lazer cuter and press brake/folder at work to help me:lol

show off!:lol

solarman i cant see why you can not weld ss to mild with a stick, give it ago and see. the rust will come to the weld but thats as is with mild to mild.

how big are/is the hole? where in derbyshire are you?
i plated my cills by mig welding pieces in, wacked area in first so lower than existing, after weld plate, skim of filler and then painted, cant tell now, i was spaying wings anyway so had paint.
welded pieces on front wings to create curve which had rotted off below plstic trim, again filler and paint to finish, not as good as cills, but they were well rotton, nothing realy sound below plastic trim, good 2" of metal missing along complete lengh, but couldnt find any good second hand ones at the time.
maybe able to do for a drink one day.

alfreton.

Stick welding Mild steel to SS was not the problem, I put SS hand rails on my Narrow boat this way with "dissimilar rods" but we are talking 3/4mm thick work, car body does not weld well with stick and whilst I am pretty good with Mig I have never tried SS work, or Alli for that matter, but I know for instance the problems of silver soldering very thin SS tube to Copper, I use borax flux paste and heat very gently from the copper side, overheat the SS and it will not take, Rick
