Glad I found this article.
I have the same problem - 97 GLS LWB Petrol - every now and again particularly at the start of a drive I lose power - almost slowing to a complete standstill - engine sounds very throaty - and then after some foot to the floor driving to try and get clear of junctions/roundabouts etc to pull up - the car suddenly springs to life again, revs lurch back up, engine suddenly sounds 'normal' and it drives just fine.

I had 2/3rds of the exhaust changed recently as it was blowing badly and turned out to be a botch job using an exhaust from 'some' other vehicle - hence the poor seal/blowing.

The problem seemed to go away ( 3/4 weeks of trouble free motoring) and I thought it was fixed.

A couple of days ago - I went out in the morning - couldn't start the car - it turned over but refused to fire .. left it for 24 hours (no time to call the AA so used my legs and public transport) .. went back to it a day later .. started first time - but .. then as I drove it for the first 10 minutes I experienced the loss of power again. (Low revs, very little drive and very throaty engine noise).

Once the power is lost for half a dozen times at the start of a journey it returns and then doesn't cut out again. (kind of unnerving) Happily driving from Bradford to Whitby and back without a hint of a problem.

I'd really like to hear if there was a solution for the original posters of this thread as I'm loathe to start replacing stuff given that it's so intermittent ... and it appears from this thread that changing out parts doesn't necessarily solve the problem.
So far I've had the exhaust sorted and given the Air filter a good clean, it didn't look to be in bad shape, certainly not the level of discolouration that would suggest changing it.

Any ideas/conclusions would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,
Louis.
