hi i just purchased my 1998 terrano 2.7tdi se r20 i have to give the heater plugs 2 heats before turning over or it wont start. regardless of weather conditions, is this normal practice.
the previous owner had the t2 for 2 months before i bought it off him ,he`s selling because of starting problems, his wife kept turning it over no heat and flattening the battery. he put a new battery on it, new lift pump & fuel filter, and new delivery hoses and clips. even though with jumpleads it would start after 2 heats when flat,
i have my doubts about the new battery though, there is an indicator window on the battery which shows red / low battery.
can anyone advise me on the above thanking you kindly Andy

check the glow plugs individually, one or more will have failed, if this is the case just replace all and you will be OK, Rick

thanks rick, i was advised by a mate it might be a faulty plug, but i`m not sure how to test them. i was also informed it might be the solinoid on the pump but how would i know. thanks again i will try the plugs first.

easy to test, just disconnect all the links to the 4 and if you have an ohm meter test each one (block to connector) it should read very low ohms, if more than 200 Ohms it has failed, if you do not have a meter, no matter just take a lead from the positive of the battery and touch it to each pin you should get a good splash of spark if it is good no splash = duff, Rick

top man, thanks again rick i will try that. i will have to find my testmeter and blow the dust off first. :thumb2 hopfully that will cure the problem. thanks again Andy.

Wire to first glow plug burnt bad connection

Mine had a broken wire to the first glow plug the only wire to the glow plug made a good connection with a large choc block until a changed for a new plug connector

ref to my starting problem its now solved, i stripped off the intercooler rad test meter at the ready, to find loose connections on 2 off the heater plugs i nipped them up tight, tested them all roughly the same, replaced the rad after a clean, and robs your mothers brother it works a treat. thanks to all that answered my requests its greatly appreciated, it was well worth the joining fee, you cant get this service any where else. thanks again Andrew
