Hi there - I've got an R51 '57 Pathfinder with the standard Bridgestone Dueller highway tyres which are still legal but on their way out (approx 3mm tread). An unexpected trip sideways down a snowy country lane in North Yorkshire last weekend confirmed this.

I used to have a Pajero which had a good set of Goodyear Wrangler A/T's on and it was unstoppable in the snow and bad weather. I ran both the Pajero and Pathfinder over the winter last year and the Pajero was the clear winner (when I could get the keys off the wife !).

I'm putting a lot of this down to the tyres as a friend of mine ran a D40 Navara with A/T's in the snow with no problems at all (he's sold it now but they were Yokohama's I think).

I now want some A/T tyres for the Pathfinder as I also tow a twin axle caravan and from time to time I tow it across fields, wet grass, through mud etc where the extra grip of the A/T makes a difference.

I've been looking for a few weeks at various things ranging from 255/65/17's to 265/70/17's whilst still trying to respect the load and speed index of 110 T as supplied by Nissan (T being max 118 mph).

Not sure if it's necessary to have a 'T' speed index as I never drive it over the dark side of 100 mph - not even close ! Maybe an 'S' rated 112 mph will be fine.....

The new General Grabbers get good reviews, the Grabber AT2's also look the job, the Cooper Discoverer ATR is a possible contender...as is the Yohohama Geolander.....

Any recommendations / advice re the above gratefully appreciated before I part with £500-£600 for a set of 4. Thanks !

I'd try and get grabber AT2's, lots of positive reviews on them.

my dad had them on his freelander and worked well.

If the speed rating is T rating by the manufacturer, then you must fit these, otherwise the insurance will be invalid if you fit S rated.:doh

Just because you don't drive that fast it doesn't matter..... They must be as original spec.

I am running yoko geolanders ats which don't have probs with on road off road or in snow
But am looking at the cooper discoverer st or stt spec next just on the grounds of more aggressive tread pattern and nearly puncture resistant design

And still on pathy r17 rims

the great tyre debate

i was originally looking at a set of mud terrains to replace the duelers on our car but like many i keep changing my mind there still legal plenty of tread just not so good in the snow, so iv been looking at the same tyres lol. The wife does a lot of motor way stuff so looks like ATs are the way to go.

Thanks to all who replied - I've bitten the bullet and ordered some of the new General Grabber AT's (265/65/17 112T). These have had good reviews and I can still satisfy the 'T' speed index (thanks for the reminder Rustic :) )

Yes - I seriously considered the Cooper Discoverer ATR - it was also available with a T speed index. They're usually a good price and look great with the Outside White Lettering (which the new Grabber AT doesn't have in the size I ordered).

The owner of a caravan site we use quite a lot has a set of these on his Disco and he's quite happy with them - he does a lot of towing in all conditions.

R51-RJB how have you got on with those tyres.
I am asking as looking at getting a second set for off road for mine. and looking at that size.

My existing ones are 255's and yours are 265's so wondered if they rubbed anywhere or caused any issues?

Thanks

I'd be surprised if you get a reply mate as he's not logged onto the form since 2012 :(
