Hi there - I've got an R51 '57 Pathfinder with the standard Bridgestone Dueller highway tyres which are still legal but on their way out (approx 3mm tread). An unexpected trip sideways down a snowy country lane in North Yorkshire last weekend confirmed this.
I used to have a Pajero which had a good set of Goodyear Wrangler A/T's on and it was unstoppable in the snow and bad weather. I ran both the Pajero and Pathfinder over the winter last year and the Pajero was the clear winner (when I could get the keys off the wife !).
I'm putting a lot of this down to the tyres as a friend of mine ran a D40 Navara with A/T's in the snow with no problems at all (he's sold it now but they were Yokohama's I think).
I now want some A/T tyres for the Pathfinder as I also tow a twin axle caravan and from time to time I tow it across fields, wet grass, through mud etc where the extra grip of the A/T makes a difference.
I've been looking for a few weeks at various things ranging from 255/65/17's to 265/70/17's whilst still trying to respect the load and speed index of 110 T as supplied by Nissan (T being max 118 mph).
Not sure if it's necessary to have a 'T' speed index as I never drive it over the dark side of 100 mph - not even close ! Maybe an 'S' rated 112 mph will be fine.....
The new General Grabbers get good reviews, the Grabber AT2's also look the job, the Cooper Discoverer ATR is a possible contender...as is the Yohohama Geolander.....
Any recommendations / advice re the above gratefully appreciated before I part with £500-£600 for a set of 4. Thanks !
