Hi Guys,

on the aircon system of my 1996 mistral there is a small blue button which I thought when I press it would start the compressor (turn on and off) but I can't see the difference, when I put cold it is icy that the button is on or off.

Also when on automatic, is it normal, there is a little click on and off depending the temperature ?

Sebastien

I think the compressor runs off the drive belts on the engine, not turned on by a switch.

Compressor is run by the aux drive belt but the clutch of the compresser is operated by the control switch, you should hear the clutch click in/out with operation of the switch.

you are correct , the little blue button does run the air con ,, when its set to auto you may hear a click as it turns itself on and off , ..... one point ..... have you checked the gas level ? .... had it recharged recently ? ....

its also good for helping to clear misty windows , if you set your heat to max , then turn air con on .... it helps to remove misty windows , im not sure how , but it does ........ glad you love your mistral , great arent they ?:thumb2

absolutely

Yes they are brilliant, getting new seats, and there will be only two things to things to solve :

- speedo
- and air con is not warm enough..... especially now

It scrubs and dries the air.......:thumb2

if your heating (irrespective of aircon use) is not warm enough, change your thermostat. Its cheap, takes ten minutes and should sort the problem.:thumb2

where can I buy one and what is it look like.... I am sure I can do it myself.

thanks

Motor factors normally the cheapest.....just behind the top of the rad, three bolts only to undo and you don't need to remove any hoses. The stat I bought last time (for a Terrano) came in a box marked Nissan/Jaguar/Citroen so clearly very common, but not sure about Mistral.....

Just have some neat anti-freeze to top up because you'll lose a bit of water when you do it, but thats all. It should then get up to normal operating temperature (and a nice warm heater) within 2-3 miles assuming there are no airlocks. I'm sure someone with a Mistral will tell you where the temp needle should be (I think its different to the Terrano/Maverick).

Check fluid level again after a day or two, remembering to top up via the radiator cap NOT the expansion tank, and make sure no leaks....

If that doesn't fix it then its something else :augie

i have a 1995 mistral , and my temp needle never goes above a quarter , in fact its quite often well below that , but i have a stat that opens at a quite low temp , its 82 i think , rick will know he fitted it , the only downside to having a stat so low is it takes ages to get the heater hot

I can't believe that 6c makes that big a difference though????

maybe its me , or maybe its the flipping freezing temps , all i know is it seems to run a heck of a lot cooler than it did before , must be a good thing ? ... perhaps not :nenau

I promise you it does.
Changed my 82C stat for a 88C one a week or so ago. Needle rarely seemed to move at all and the heater was crap.
Proper toasty now and needle sits at half way most of the time.
Might be an idea to swap them back when/if it warms up again.
As said, you don't need to take any pipes off, but I took the opportunity to take the heater pipes off and give the matrix a damned good flushing for good measure.

Stat cost about a tenner from autofactors.

thanks

Ok I will get the one for sale on ebay, and will let you know.

Pretty much my story is that:thumbs

Please, why not the expansion tank.

I think - as it may take a while for the neat antifreeze to mix if added to the expansion tank, where as in the rad it's mixed stright away :thumb2

Please, why not the expansion tank.

theres no gravity feed from the expansion tank....... the rad cap is the highest point in the system:thumb2

and I speak as one who has done it the wrong way and almost paid the price LOL

just to clear up a misconception here, the expansion tank has a two way communication with the radiator, assuming the rad cap is in good order, any overpressure in the rad will when hot go into the expansion tank and when it cools will be sucked back into the rad, this happens every time the motor heats and cools, so neat anti freeze in the expansion tank will soon mix if you remove your radiator cap and have room to add fluid then your rad cap is faulty and should be replaced, or the pipe between the two is faulty, no if's no but's that is how it is, Rick
