well...... thanks to the erudite members of this forum I can tell you that the wire is the actual sensor . apparently the flow of air and volume of air passing the wire alters the resistance offered to a flow of current passed through it ...... this is then transmitted to the ECU ( electronic control Unit ) and varies the performance of such things as injection pump and turbo ( i think )

Posted about this abit ago, but cant find it.

The MAF tells the ECU about engine load.

Basically it looks at throttle position, revs, and MAF to determine how much fuel to throw in.

It does this by passing a current through the little wire to heat it up. Air passing over the wire cools it, and causes the current to increase. This is what the ecu monitors.

It's a very basic system.

well i new their was some brainy buggers out their!!!:bow next question is i bought a new 1 a while back and it had NO WIRE!! so i replaced the wire from the old 1 to the new 1 and pop it back in the truck ran the same as it did befor!!!! stay with me:) then i took the wire off and the truck still runs the same??? so dose it really do anything this wire? of is mine had it???

oooooo is it a resistor half way along this wire!!! and do they bugger up??:nenau any ideas?

What do you mean there was no wire?! It is VERY fine, and lives within a protective duct, so you'll struggle to see it anyhow. There are actually two. The thing operates on the principle of the 'wheatstone bridge'.

The 'thing' that is exposed is the air temp sensor.

How does your truck drive???

PS, have you got the Bosch MAF or the Hitatchi one, as they work differently and are visually different. I get the feeling there is something underlying with your truck..

my truck drives a treat:) plenty of power ect:) so the 1 on the outside you can see is for the air temp? sorry not on about the 1 inside the maf sensor have not taken it apart! sorry for any confustion!!:doh never even new their was 1 inside !!! you had 1 apart? so the 1 you can see it makes no differance to my truck if its on their or not:confused: surely it must do something:confused:

Can you count the wires in the MAF connector? There are 5 on the MAF, and often only 4 in the harness. If this is so, then the ECU doesnt read air temp.

They are not dis-assemble-able, well not if you expect it to work again after!

thats what i cant work out the new 1 i bought had no wire yet the connections to carry the wire!! the original sensor in the truck had the wire!! but it seems to make no differance if the wire is their or not!:nenau but surely nissan would have not put it their for no reson:confused: thats why i was thinking that maybe the resistor on the wire had it!! if they can ware out?

just had a look with their are 5 wires in the harness!!! is my truck a highbreed!!!!!! or some 1 in the factor was board and added some extras to my truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

your not the only 1:doh take a pic tomorrow so all can see!!! what nissan have been up to!!! their is 5 wires to the air mass sensor in the plug bit! and a wire on the outside of the sensor which you can see and it looks like a resistor half way along it!!!!

Just take a couple of pics of what you've got, cause I cant work out what's going on anymore either:augie

I had a bit of a prob with my MAF. I needed to tow the caravan that day, so I removed the connector wire from the MAF and hey presto, the truck went out of limp mode and I was able to tow the caravan 110 miles.

There was a slight reduction in power but a big decrease in fuel economy. All rectified when I cleaned the MAF.

ok will take 1 of the sensor and the wire!!! and also the plug:thumbs mine cant be the only truck with a wire on the outer side of the sensor!! which i thought tells the ecu how much air is passing though the air flow!!!

pics??

mines a 97, but the wires are on the inside...but clearly visible.

sorry no pics:( have not had time today and its too cold to go outside with the camra in the dark! never know what i will take a photo off:eek: do it tommorow:thumbs

Sid sorry if this is egg sucking but you reaise don't you that the working bit of the MAF is in the airflow inside the solid bit of tube that is between the airbox and the turbo inlet pipe - you have to remove the jubilee clips either end and remove the tube to see inside to photograph the actual MAF hot wire.....?

i do:) the wire im on about is on the outerside of the mass sensor!! so if it take the sensor out from the air flow pipe!! and unplug it i will take a pic !!!!! dont u have this wire on your air mass sensor? its on the outer part!!! not inside the plastic case of the sensor it is connected at 2 points!
