ABS problem

My daughters 2000 manual LWB Terrano has been giving problems recently. When braking the ABS is activating and the brake pedal is doing the usual hissing/juddering. (The ABS warning light comes on at switch on then goes off) I've checked the other posts out re sensors and would like some advice please.

I've put a meter on the front drivers side sensor and am getting a reading even when wiggling the cable, however I noticed when I disconnected the sensor lead plug from behind the rubber splash guard, the supply wire from the wiring loom seemed badly twisted and the outer covering was a bit brittle.

I took the car for a drive with the front drivers side ABS sensor disconnected and the juddering has now stopped and the car brakes well.

Am I fooling myself into thinking I have isolated the fault to the front drivers sensor and if not how can I check the wiring from the connector plug back to the ABS control box?

AS the ABS warning light stays off when all the sensors are connected, does this not indicate that the wiring to the sensors is OK and that even though I have my suspicions about the twisted wire, the connection is still being made?

Lots of questions for my first post, but I would really appreciate any help you can give.

As an addition to the above, I reconnected the drivers side ABS sensor and the problem returned. Keeping the drivers side connected, I then disconnected the front passenger side sensor and the problem has gone away. This one has got me pulling whats left of my hair out.

Quite often when these sensors go it is just the wires, have a search through the previous posts as this has been raised. I think people have cut the wires close to the sensor and resoldered new pieces of wire on.

Had the Terrano put on the diagnostic computer today and no faults were registered. The ABS is still acting up big time, and to be honest its too dangerous to drive with the ABS the way it is.

Heres an update - perhaps someone might know what I should try next.

I've checked all four wheel sensors for resistance and they are all fine. Also checked them for voltage when the wheel is turned and all are giving out readings. The front two give out higher readings than the rear two - I take it thats normal?

ABS is still playing up. I tried braking hard at 30mph it kicked in and also when traveling slowly.

One thing that I have noticed and can't figure out, when driving along and braking or even taking foot off the accelerator, I'm hearing a loud click from the area of the drivers side footwell. Similarly if driving along and accelerate hard, I hear the click. I've checked the pedal linkage and also the nuts and bolts securing them to the firewall and all seem OK. I'm wondering is there something in and around this area that might be something to do with the braking and hence affecting the ABS? As I said before, the ABS light is off and no faults have been recorded on the control unit.

Any help would be appreciated.

The only thing I can think of regaurding the clicking sound your hearing is perhaps your auto locking hubs are trying to lock if they are fitted to yours as I think the change over point was 1999-2000 :?

OK heres an update. Checked the abs rings on the front and they are fine. Have discovered that the abs problem only happens when in two wheel drive. In four wheel drive its fine. Anybody any ideas? (ABS warning light is still off)

Latest info is it appears to be a fault with the front nearside wheel sensor. Does anyone have any idea where I could pick one up at a better price than I'm being quoted? (£200)

OK - finally sorted it out - as suspected from the diagnostic machine, it was the front nearside sensor. Glad its now sorted - now just have to sort out the clunking from the drivers foot well area and the clicking clutch pedal.

Clunking in drivers foot well area now sorted out. Removed the drivers seat and found a large metal rod/pin rolling about in a void beneath the seat - must have been put under the seat by previous owner and rolled into the little void - rolling backwards and forwards on acceleration/braking. Car is now sorted and going really well.
