After a week of owning the truck its been running fine till tonight.Checked the horses tonight and had to brake hard as someone was hammering it up the other way.Anyway i noticed that the abs didnt kick in what so ever and the wheel locked up.Ive no warning nights on the dash at all.I'll try to get a look at it in the morning but woundering if anyone could point me in the right direction to what it maybe.Oww and its a 1999 TDi......

Silly Q has yours got it ? As my 1999 didn't:thumb2 if it was a broken wire the ABS light should of come on does the light come on when put ignition on ?

ABS light

If you have ABS unit maybe someone has put black silicone inside the cluster to black out the lamp ?

If it has got ABS, there will be a unit under the bonnet, with brake pipes coming out.
Also it should have a fuse.

How fast were you going, it only kicks in above certain speeds.

I know on the back roads, when I have only been doing 20mph, or so, my nearside wheel locked up on the mud, but I also know that the ABS worked a few weeks back, when I had to do a hard brake on the motorway with the caravan on the back, as I was cut up by those "Knights of the road", a BMW driver.

The ABS light comes on when i turn the ignition on then then as soon as the truck is running it goes out.Had a quick look at the unit and seems ok(O/S wing close to the bulk head).I tryed it again at 30 and still did the same.Need to do some basic bits as ive not had it long just to check everything is ok and grease stuff up so ill see what i can find along the way

Want to know the best test?

No trailer, wait for some wet roads, go somewhere quiet, hammer it and then slam the anchors on, you'll soon find out :thumb2

Ive tryed that one today and all that happened was they locked up and that was at 40.Ive had a quick look around but cant see anything out of place.:confused:

Had you worked on mine before I got it? :lol
Between the ABS light and the Airbag light, one was siliconed and the other had black insulation tape rolled up and stuffed down the tube :doh

Hate it when you buy a car and find bodges like this!!!!

I was expecting loads of nasties when I brought the Maverick but luckily there has only been one which was the starter motor positive cablehad corroded and had been re attached with insulation tape, no good when I was on a work jolly doing team building exercises in the middle of nowhere an 4 people were relying on me for lifts!!!! :doh

Soon found the issue though and got going again lol, I've done a nice repair on it now though :thumb2

pffft pull the fuse, the abs shite on these trucks anyway

Its a long shot but if the rear brake linings have been contaminated with brake fluid or oil then they will lock up and the ABS will struggle to keep pace it will just lock the wheel can you tell if its front or rear? Even so the the light should at least flash or you should get some judder up the pedal as it activates.
I would check them first if it is the rear that locks up.
Then take a look at the instrument cluster to make sure its not been tampered with.
Have you spoken to the previous registered keeper?
The ABS is designed to trip in when a sensor detects wheel spin and remove pressure from the system to let the wheel rotate. If there is a fault in the ABS unit it should show up with the light staying on.

have you checked the wheel sensors for continuity . my abs was playing up and I found it was dead . the front should read 0.9-1.1 ohms and the rears 1.44-1.76ohms. if you download the work shop manual http://f9x.co.uk/briggie/index.html and go to the br section look under br65 and it tells you how to test your abs .but you need to check the wire close to the connection and then by the sensor . just to makes sure its not the wire breaking down

Sorry bit wrong there its designed to release if wheel if it locks up and if rear shoes r contaminated then no way will they lock up it will cause the front to lock up more as its them doing all the work.

I want to know how to pull the bulb or blank it ? I'm planning on removing the lot, but at the mo I just need to stop the abs light from being on permanently

Think on urs the abs bulb and all warning lights r an led built in to the board could be wrong

On snow covered & icy roads particularly on downhill descents it has been my experience on a variety of newish vehicles that I drive in the course of my work that the wheels just lock up on braking and you do a four wheel slide downhill.

This has happened to me on the old and new Merc ML's It appears not to matter if the vehicle has ABS, traction control or stability control.
Not tried one with the off road downhill decent control though.

I assume ABS perceives that all the wheels are rotating at the same speed i.e zero so does nothing.

If it were me, I'd be checking the sensors for damage on the wheels as these are most likely to be what is kaput

Check the fuse, if you haven't done so already

After that my knowledge is limited, there will be an ABS pump somewhere under the engine bay, take a look at that and see if there is any obvious sign of damage, if you have the facility, swap it with someone else's.

I know my grandad has just had to have a new ABS pump for his 528i BMW as it was knackered, his brought up a warning light on the dash so I'm not sure if our Nissans would register anything MIL wise if they were damaged

(Scrap that, just checked the workshop download and no codes for ABS)

Let us know how you get on

I had ABS on my 03' Focus and hated it, I prefer to cadence brake :sly

I would be tempted to check the ABS relay (frontd/side wing) if this fails no ABS not sure but if 1 sensor fsils wouldn't the other 3 still funtion?

If theres a problem with the abs the light should stay on but....some people to get the car through the mot wire the abs light to the oil or battery light or even to a separate timer so it illuminates then goes off.
