Have just picked up a chrome A bar and looks like it bolts onto the tow points, I have two bolts/nuts and two plate washers that came with it. I assume that the plate washer goes the opposite side of the tow point to the bar. Tow point hole is much bigger that the bolt though, is that normal? Also the guy welded two metal strips from the middle mounts. I've not looked, but where do they fit to? I am hoping to drill and bolt them (picture please?). There are also two small mounts lower down which I assume the number plate has to be moved to?

Can someone put a dim wit straight please :augie

Anyone? :nenau

Post up a picture of the bars, as there seem to be a lot of different ways of mounting them...

Mine uses the 4 holes in the end of the chassis, and allows the towing hook to be refitted, plus 2 extra straps on the top that go to two pre-tapped holes on top of the chassis near the horns.

Some older models have the upper mounting running vertically, and it bolts sideways near the number plate, but I think that was mainly MK1's and Mistrals.

Normally to fit an A bar you have to remove the front pig tail recovery hook (later ones didn't have it) & it bolts straight up & secured at the top by 2 brackets that go through the bumper

I'll try and get some pictures up here. But it looks like the bottom brackets on the A bar bolt through the towing eyes, then there are two metal strips that go through the grille?

OK, got some photos of the A bar. First time Photobucket user, wish me luck :augie

So the bottom brackets are bolted through the large hole in the towing eyes. Then the added strips have to be fixed to the cross member behind the grille?

So are these the correct mounting points?

Looks as if the brackets have been bent?

Added metal strip welded on...

Looks as if it's the right bar?

Added strips need to be bent and shaped to fit?

Just rested in place... The top mounts are for lights, are the bottom ones for the number plate? If so why as the number plate is not covered by the bar.

mine bolted through the recovery points with a big washer on it.
my top mounting bars where bolted on not welded but same idea.
just be aware that if its from a pre 2000 model it may foul on the bumper a bit.
I had to slot the mounting holes on the bottom of the A bar to get it to sit further forward and clear the bumper.

The same as Elty, mine uses the 4 recovery bolt holes, and allows the recovery hook to be re-fitted.

I had to fit my own top bracing bars, as mine was from a Mistral, where the brackets were vertical, and would on the correct model bolt in by the number plate, but I had to cut those brackets off, as they fowled the bumper in my model. I ran the equivalent of your brace bars from my spot lamp brackets back to the same bumper panel yours reach to, and I fitted rivnuts in there to bolt it to, but IIRC further out, near where yours are, there are a couple of captive nuts I was originally going to try and use.

It does look as though your A bar is from an earlier model (i.e. similar to my '94). mine also fits to the two lower recovery points (with a big washer) and with two arms which pass between the bumper and the grille and are bolted to two pre-fitted captive nuts either side of the radiator.

So I assume that you have to remove the grille to fix the brace bars? So pull it forward to access the mounting points, fix, then refit grille?

Any pictures of these captive nuts?

Yes you have to remove the grill.
No captive nuts on mine so I bolted the top supports to the bumper where the plastic bolts to the steel inner frame.
Just had to shorten them a few inches and re drill them.
