hi all,
when in 4wd high driving in the snow what sort of speed is safe, as in can i drive over 50mph when road is not so coverd in snow, cos i dont want to damage anything, as always thanks in advance eboy.

On snow/ice/mud you can drive as fast as you like in 4wd, just remember 4 wheel braking in not unique to the Terrano!
:thumb2

I've said elsewhere eboy, I've done the run from Oxford to Barrow (260 miles) quite a few times in the pouring rain in 4WD all the way, most of it at 80-90mph.

The real damage is to tyres when turning tightly on dry tarmac, as they take most of the strain of transmission windup.....in a straight line in wet or slippery conditions you're fine.

thank you that puts my mind at rest will give it more welly now used it today for the first time totally awsome couldnt stop grinning at everyone who was having trouble sliding every where

just remember that on slippery surfaces, even in 4x4 it is always better to be cautious!
the more speed, the more breaking distance, the more ice/mud the greater the slide when cornering at high speed.

Its still easy to break away with all that torque though even in 4WD just by giving it some welly - if that happens its time for 4WD low. Thats good for up to 45-50 but will hit the rev limiter after that.

I was going to ask the same ! I used my 4 wd high gear to get home from work yesterday ,my husband said i shouldn't use it if i dont need to i was only going 30 max on the main roads. Never used it before so i was well chuffed when the little green pic came up and there were no strange noises or clicks.
So i dont have to worry about damaging the diffs if i drive to the shops (puppy's running out of puppy food !) Excellent,i knew you lot would know !!

thanks
:)

id say if you get on to main routes where you can see the metaled road then then
knock it in to 2wd, after all youve got shift on the fly upto atleast 25 mph. and of
course if was in 4wd if auto hubs theyll stay locked unless you reverse so going
back in will be easier.

forget this crap about reversing to unlock, they'll come out on own and you are
releasing the transmission at the box anyway. afterall late terranos had fully
locked front hubs all time no free wheel action anyway.

enjoy

Seriously thats what its for TL - unless the road is dry and you are executing tight turns you won't have a problem. You will know immediately when its time to go back to 2WD; transmission wind-up is very obvious...in tight manoeuvres the steering tightens up and feels very heavy and the wheels feel as if they are 'skipping', which indeed they are to compensate for the wind-up.

I spent most of yesterday in 4WD low with no problems, quite the opposite.

Good on you for getting out there and enjoying it! :thumb2

Will someone please explain the differnece between those hubs.

is it a possible worthwhile mod ?

auto hubs were fitted as a fuel saver.

basically bringing car into 4wd get front prop/diff/axle spinning
which then locks auto hubs.

manual hubs, are either totally free or locked so you get out
and lock them before going into 4wd, but can keep em locked
full times as front parts spin but arent connected to main 2wd
transmission until you go into 4wd.

its the way the newest t2s are/were to save costs. fuel use is
negligible. some folks manage to break their auto hubs so ,many
go for manual route as cheaper and more bullet proof.

If you've managed to break your snap rings (unlikely), if you want to spend several times the cost of new snap rings to buy new manual hubs (unlikely), and if you want to get out every time you want the thing in 4WD (work that one out yourself), then yes its worthwhile. :)

And Jim, the games not over - we haven't found a 2.7TDi with fixed hubs yet, only the 3.0 and that doesn't count! :):):)

id say if not broken dont fix but if you find
the springs or brake clips fail in the hubs
then parts are as much as new manuals so
worht changing for peace of mind.

mnay have changed them, jim-t, zippy656
i think but my t2's were fine til sold it used
and abused.

on the troll i can lock them with a wheel brace!
or leave auto to sort itself.

Hi TTT2
When you say 'late Terranos' how late do you mean2002 and after or before that? OR was it just the 3ltr?

ive still got auto hubs :)
they're working well, in and out od 4wd.. as needed

So far CL we've found a couple of 3.0 versions that have the fixed hubs, but no 2.7s yet - still waiting, but since the 3.0 was the only 'facelift' after the MkIV (which still had auto hubs), I'm sitting on my dinner money. Search on 'fixed hubs and see what comes up.

Hi Lacroupade

I searched as you suggested and amongst a lot of other guff I found this response from Terranosaurus to your query on a thread by Chaster.

"Chaster hasn't got auto hubs, Nissan deleted them later on in production and just fitted drive flanges."

Chaster's 2.7 T2 is a 2002 and apparently did not have auto hubs when he got it, which seems to confirm Terranosaurus' comment.

I'll continue searching but if I get no definite result I'll ask the direct question on a new thread.

Regards CL

Interesting....my 02 has got autos and was the first of the MkIVs (minor changes to the already-facelifted MkIII square headlight version and the last known facelift apart from the 3.0 introduction)....keep searching!
