would it not be a thrust bearing?:nenau

Thrust bearing would make a noise when you press the clutch pedal and not when its released.

Try checking gearbox oil level - might be worth a shot of one of the oil improvers, molyslip etc, not a fan of them myself but many people are.

is there a link for this (checking gearbox oil)?

many thanks

Zippy the manual link Queen will be along shortly:augie, but if you crawl underneath the filling and drain points are actually very obvious..

NSV what sort of noise is it exactly? whining, grinding, clattering? oh sorry those are wife questions...LOL

no serious question, really!

would it be best to change the oil completly and add an improver (molyslip) or just change oil and wait and see? I MEAN HOPE AND PRAY:eek::eek::eek:

well its cheap, easy and it can't hurt, so I guess it makes its own mind up really...! :)

got your fairy liquid bottle and pipe? or are there cleverer ways these days?!

Terra can you just confirm that - I've seen plenty of sites where people say its t'other way round and others that say its likely to be input / lay shaft bearing on the gearbox.....

I ask because I have the same rattle when I release the clutch pedal in neutral - its intermittent and not persistent, but I can induce it if I pump the pedal sometimes....

If its g/box how big a job is it (probably not DIY here I'm afraid!

cheers

paul

hard to describe, push the clutch in it goes ,lift up noise comes back.no whining, grateing,no metal to metal noise, drives ok all gears workin 2h,not tried anything else 4x4 etc.still cant describe the noise!!!! wait till it stops or falls off maybe the answer!!:augie

gasp!!!!

i suspect theres folk on here you could trust who'd come and do it for less than that!!!

BUt TBH, when I had an issue with my autobox on my older truck, an expert old-timers advice was to just wait and see if it broke, as its easier to diagnose that way, plus it would probably keep going for a very long time.....and he was right, another 25000-odd miles to be imprecise!

Yes thats the right way around - as with most things on the intenet there are plenty of armchair experts on the net who get it wrong.

When you put you foot down on the clutch clutch pedal you engage the thrust release bearing with the clutch - thus it will only make a noise with your foot down on the clutch. Drive to the gearbox is diseengaged and any associatted noise stops.

When your foot is off the clutch the release bearing is not working and drive is going to the input side of the gearbox - thus if theres a noise in this condition its the gearbox

I had some gear box whine and this is what I did.. It's still fine now... 2 years later.
20th March 2007
I changed the gearbox oil, added 105ml of molyslip G and 100ml of multiglide, I jacked up the passenger side and overfilled by approx 200ml, I took her for a 20 mile drive to get the oil circulating, and 2 days later the gear box noise has reduced by 80% I could not believe it.
Later I did the transfer box, but only added 50ml of G and 50ml of multiglide.
Tip, in order to fill the gearbox and avoid gear oil running down your arm, get a 1 metre length of garden hose with a funnel at one end open the bonnet and thread the hose down the back of the engine, ty-wrap the funnel to the fuel filter hoses then go below and position the pipe into the fill hole, but wedge it up so that the pipe flows down into the gearbox, otherwise the oil will run back along the hose.
Warm the oil container first (in a bucket of hot water) and it goes in a treat.
Molyslip can be obtained from a contact on our site.

Also a note from a previous member.. If all else fails... and local to you as well....

Thanks Terra - tad more clarification if you don't mind; the (intermittent) rattle I get is only when in neutral;does that change the diagnosis at all?

Sorry to hijack NSVs thread but he seems to have given up and gone on the beer! :naughty

All, to be honest this sounds a lot like mine as well.
When in Neutral and cold makes a rattle noise. Clutch up. Put clutch in it goes away.

When warm no noise.
I think i am going to get Gearbox oil done. I dont have a flat drive etc to do it myself.

i did indeed go on the beer,,,:lol:lol:lol

fantastic night .

back to thread:sly

noise is when clutch is up and noise disappears when clutch is pressed:eek:
when warm noise subsides:nenau still there but quieter
i hope im just looking for faults if there is a pronblem after suggested oil change i will let all know,

lacroupade cheers pal for your input and messages:thumb2:thumb2:thumbs
nice to talk to a good un!!!:bow
