I replaced the silencer & rear pipe last feb., not bad as they are the original from dec. 2004! I resisted replacing the front pipe as it looked OK & I've been warned about the horrors involved in getting the 3 bolts out. This has now sheared off completely & developed 3 holes as well, so I've bodged it up for now but it will have to be done soon.

Can anyone give me some useful tips before I start? Apart from eg. dosing the bolts with release oil for a few days beforehand, would it improve access to remove the NS wheel?

This is giving me nightmares & I haven't even started yet LOL. HELP!!!!!

Is it nuts AND bolts or are the bolts fixed and just nuts to remove, or do some bolts go into a fixed thread?? If it is a case of both nuts and bolts can be replaced then just cut the old ones off, save loads of swearing :thumb2

Go for a long run out and then as soon as you get back, douse the threads with WD40/GT85 etc and then return when the exhaust is a little cooler.

I have a full system to go back on the 3 litre soon

Here is a pic from the underside, 2 bolts in the top and 1 thread at the bottom

I know I am sad but......

I gave up doing exhaust work when I fitted my last system on a Manta GT/E back in 1990 ish. It was a nightmare, snapped manifold bolts, wrong parts all to save what turned out in the end a few quid.

I had a trolley jack, axle stands and about 5 hours later suitably grazed elbows and a command of expletives I had not used for years.

Hope you have better luck or a 4 poster ramp.

Looks to be 3 studs & nuts. Have been dosing them twice daily with WD40 whilst waiting for the new down-pipe to arrive off ebay. I hope to God they don't shear off as access is diabolical LOL. Yet another brilliant Nissan design.
I’m not looking forward to having to drill-out the studs, but at least they will then get replaced by bolts & nuts assy’d with copper grease.

Thanks for all the tips, it just needs doing now……….I only hope it lasts another 13 years.

Got stuck in to changing the front exhaust today. Easy 1 hour job I was thinking......After several days of dosing with WD40 I was VERY relieved to get the three studs undone without too much trouble. Sigh of relief, then started fitting new down-pipe. This is where it all goes tits-up!

Attached front end easily only to find 12mm gap between front & rear sections! Panic time, car is stuck up on ramps blocking driveway so solution has to be found damn quick. No suitable spacers available locally so end up cutting flange off old pipe & using 2 gaskets & a load of gun-gum to bridge the gap. Rear hangers also had to be modified. 4 hours (& a lot of cursing!) later it's back on the road & unnervingly quiet. I only hope it lasts, don't fancy doing it again at my time of life.

So much for ebay & DIY saving money. Think I'll bite the bullet & let exhaust shop do it next time. LOL (or not).

That's a pain in the rs mate but I like your solution, quick thinking and it should be very strong I reckon, respect :thumb2

Done 30m so far & all appears OK (sigh of relief!) but I'll be nervous for quite a while. Carrying a can of Gun-Gum in the boot from now on LOL.
