I know Rick's Patrol is a different kettle of fish, but I was very disappointed with mine!

I took the exhaust off mine, just after the flexi-pipe. I was gonna run it open downpipe to see if I could live with the noise before fitting a short 3" pipe and deciding what muffler/silencer I was gonna put on, if any...

Well, it didn't make truck sound any more 'Beefy'... Can't hear the exhaust note over the sound of the engine anyway! So I just stuck a little droop on it and called it done. (It has improved the EGT at least!)

Yeah but Rick has a nice 6cyl so can imagine it would be a little different?

Yes! :clap

I know you are doing it yourself, but if you could take it from the turbo back and get rid of that nasty sharp bend in the downpipe from the turbo that would really help it.

Are you putting on a bleed valve too to up the boost a bit?

Strange that is. I know Robs one was the same too, not loud at all.

Some of the 'bought' exhausts I've heard videos off have made quite a bit of difference sound wise so not sure why that would be.

just out of interest, is that 3 inch internal or external diameter?

Last time I took my Patrol for an MOT, I thought I would have a quick look under it first and found the exhaust had broken clean in two parts, so only had the front box but this had not made it any louder than normal, as until I got under I had no idea it was broken.

Kind regards

Russell.

When I removed mine, I thought those bolts would be a pain to get to... But mine had snapped there too!

What about back pressure is this not needed on diesels?

I know petrol engines need back pressure does the higher compression ratio of a diesel render this unnecessary or thinking about it is it the turbo that does the trick as it forces the combustion products in under pressure rather than a sucking action.

TBH I find a two stroke engine easier to comprehend than a diesel one !

No Mac once you turbo an engine back pressure is a no no, you want to get the gasses out as efficiently as possible to spool the turbo up as soon as you can, but like any flow being it gas or water, once a laminar flow is established it helps pull the lag times and all engine have lag times, so a small pipe has high velocity but higher drag, but a smooth big bore pipe has less velocity but much lower drag, so wins, Rick

Thanks for that Rick, makes sense when you explain it, I guess there is a crossover point where too big is of no benefit.

Either way a big pipe always ticks boxes for me - probably a bloke thing. lol

Indeed... That's what I said! :lol

Stupid 4 Cyl engine! :doh

Apparently on the ZD30 it's the muffling effect of the turbo mainly, gets a little louder but not much.

Plus side is you can run a straight through without getting bothered for excess noise, downside is you don't get that meaty sound.

6 cyl will always sound more meaty though! My 4.2 is running with a blown flexi at the moment and at just over 3000 revs she pretty much drowns out the stereo :lol

Yeah, you can hear the Turbo making a 'W-hooooo' sound! :naughty

Arrived today some 45 bends, flexy and some gaskets, looks like I will have to cut my own flanges from 10mm plate as I am not paying the money wanted on line, but not sure I will have much time this coming week end as getting behind work wise, Rick
