My thoughts on not running bumpstops and the tyre contacting arch/tub are this :
On my truck I have -25 offset rims so even when the axle is at 40 degrees or so, one side fully retracted one side fully dropped, contact is only at top of arch. This would never happen at speed only when traversing ruts and rocks at 1mph, so damage is limited to a bit of polishing off of underseal and nowt to speak of on tyre, this has been the case for me thus far with out bump stops anyhow
