So what MODs you going to do then??

got to get some bigger AT's at least!

i have a zafira what did this in the damp.. dry/belt or pully is what my turned out to be. quick squird of silicone spray and it has stopped

Ok, so did the soapy water test, noise all went away when I sprayed the belt.

Found the receipt, was last done December 2012 :)

Mine on the Maverick, 2.7td, sometimes chatters, chee chee chee...
At first I thought it was mechanical, bearing or steering pump, but by pouring water over the belt, it went silent.

In fact that was enough for it to go quiet for several months.
Two identical belts on my Mav, both are close to 10 years old, I keep the originals as spares next to the jack.

Sometimes just knowing what it is, is all that is required.:thumb2

In the past I have used WD 40, but just a cup of water now and again sorts it.
I think there becomes polished spots on the belt.

Either way, a new belt is worth having, But keep the old belt, as it still works, in the Jack compartment in the boot, in a plastic bag.

Now next problem...

Most fixes on these vehicles are fairly cheap, or even free.
Check the carpet in the front passenger foot well, these are often damp, and so easy to sort.

best regards,

Rustic

I followed the soapy water suggestion, but the squeal came back as soon as the belt dried, so I guess just plain water wouldn't work

No matter, it won't be used over the weekend, except for a trip to the jetwash and back and then it's booked in for Tuesday anyway ;)

Forgot to post last night but one thing the workshop manual suggested was checking the alternator retaining bolts are tight as if they're loose it could cause the belt to slip, might be worth checking?

Ooh thanks for the tip, I'll have a look tomorrow while I'm getting all dirty with it :D

Update from the garage... they reckon its the tensioner bearing and it's over 200 quid for a replacement part :(

They also said the radiator might be leaking, so it needs that too. Have found one from a specialist Nissan breakers for 100 quid incl VAT & delivery, with 6 months guarantee.

Would that be the option to go for? Don't think I can afford a new one as well as the tensioner.

Same place have got the tensioner too with 3 months guarantee. Would you recommend new or 2nd hand?

Not the best of days in the Cupcake household :(

How bads the radiator leak? If it's just a small one I'd try some K seal at £10 a bottle - I picked some up when I had a suspected leak on my old shogun. I didn't need it in the end but the guy at the motor factors said K seal was the reason he'd a brand new radiator sitting at the back of his garage for 2 years (he'd ordered it before trying the sealant).

A quick check of fleabay shows the tensioner pulley available as a seperate part for between £50 and £100 inc postage (mainly from Oz) but how easy/well advised it is to just replace it rather than the whole tensioner I don't know :(

Depends on what you use the truck for i wouldnt even consider second hand rad or pulley but i use mine every day on motorway. If your rad lets go and overheats the engine will cost far more than new rad

Bloke showed me the part and diagrams and said the tensioner is one unit and he has been given prices around £193, but takes about 5-7 days delivery time.

He wasn't 100% sure on the rad leak as he said there was no coolant in the header tank, so might just be a small leak. It's topped up so I'll keep an eye on it. I've found a brand new rad for a good price with 12 month guarantee, but might try some of that K seal if there is a leak and see how it goes.

Does the rad have to come off to change that tensioner? If it does then I might get the rad anyway for my own peace of mind. I commute every day on the motorway so would rather be safe than sorry

Fez is right, most times you can put in a new bearing, but of course you need a press, but often a large vice will do, I could be wrong of course as I have no first hand knowledge of your tensioner, can you post a pic, Rick

I used a vice on my 90 and went in very easily compared to say a UJ. I was lucky as my mate was making a drawer system for his tools and the bearing was the exactly the same!

As for the bearing get some numbers off it and contact Kent Bearings in Hastings, if they cannot get it then it is not available, not let me down yet and I have had some very unusual jobs, Rick
