So finally got round to putting my Glowplug Replacement/Throttle Body Clean and EGR Blanking write ups into pdf's and also made one with some pics of my catch can set up + a bits list.

Put them into Onedrive :- http://1drv.ms/1EWiXEY

Black gunge etc

Nice post with pictures and text made good reading.

Seeing the gummed up inlet throttle body on the glow plug section reminded me of a fairly common problem with the 3 litre V6 Merc Diesel engine. I have seen several where both manifolds were so carboned up they stopped working. On the Merc V6 the inlet manifold bodies are about £1k plus for each side just for the parts. The cause of this gumming up is not the EGR valve though that does help adding some carbon.
The problem lies with the Neoprene Oil Seal between the air cleaner inlet and where it meets the inlet manifold. There is a Neoprene seal where the pipes join in the centre of the V manifold area.
When this seal deteriorates it leaks very small amounts of oil onto the small control unit that lies underneath the pipework. This control unit is the throttle body actuator and as the oil mist / drip continues it gets into the control unit causing it to malfunction leading to a carboned up inlet manifold. The carbon deposits are so bad it is a case of replacement of the body and actuator.

There are two different sizes of oil seal one costs about £30 the other is £11 ish. First thing I did when I got my 300C was check this seal. Luckily mine is the cheaper one so it's something I replace each year when I do the oil service.
Unfortunalely the gap between the inlet pipe and the small control unit is not big enough to put any kind of shield in place and its a pretty hot area as well. Not the best design feature for a Merc.
Interestingly they have had engine ECU failures on some models as a result of oil leaks from a camshaft sensor. The oil works its way into the engine wiring loom and capilliary action in the loom pulls the oil into the ECU connector blocks where they damage the ECU itself.

Makes you wonder sometimes how they do so well in F1 ! lol

I have a dead 2.6 W210 due to an oil seal failure on the gearbox plug that allowed fluid into the loom and filled up the gearbox ecu with transmission fluid. To say I'm disappointed is a massive understatement, lovely car killed by a 20p oil seal!

Gearbox seal failure

I am not sure which models were affected but there was a service measure for a gearbox oil seal a few years ago circa 2005/6 we did hundreds of them. If they were leaking oil we replaced them otherwise they were done when the vehicle came in for service. Cars that were serviced outside the main dealer network slipped the net.

The seal was a short plastic tube thing with a black section at one end.

PS for service measure read recall - not safety related

Yep Merc use the term Service Measure for all recalls unless there is a real safety issue.

If it safety related its a recall.

Many manufacturers are avoiding the term recall due to poor press etc.

Things are a little oily :hmh

Thats a great help, especially with the pictures, have you got a link for the Provent outlet in the UK? Trying to find someone in France is hard work, and Australian suppliers want more than the cost of the unit just for postage.

Hi. Found this just now. Will be scouring the web later for more, but on first impressions, I may not have to.
