Seen lots of posts about engine oil but most replies seem to be for the 2.7 engine suggesting 10w40 Mineral. Comma site, and others, is saying 15w40 Semi. Service book seems to suggest 10w40 or 15w40 but nowt on mineral or semi. Sounds like full synthetic is a no no.

Any ideas?

Hi. I used the recommended oil from comma. I've towed my 2tn caravan a few hundred miles and I've had no problems at all. I change mine every 5k miles changing the filter every other time.

Ever since buying my 3.0L 4 years ago I've used 5W40 full synth. I was told this is better for the turbo & takes longer to drain so eliminating 'dry' start-ups (My Terra frequently stands for 1 to 2 weeks).
It uses no oil in 5K & does approx. 1/3 of this towing 1.6T per year

I did start with 5w30 but was advised that, with higher mileage especially, this could potentially cause turbo 'blow-by' leading to the engine running on the oil alone.....swiftly followed by disaster.

Whether or not any of the above is to be believed I have had no problems so will be sticking with it.

Would that be the Comma XT2000 15W40 Semi-synthetic?

Shell comes up with Helix HX7 10w40 Semi-synthetic.
Castrol comes up with Magnatec 5w30 Fully Synthetic.

I'm tempted with the Comma route at the moment bearing in mind that the Nissan manual does say 15w40 is preferable when ambient temperature is above -20c!

Yes that is what I'm using. Also have used the recommended oils for everything else. The only problem I had was finding auto gearbox oil as comma didn't list anything.

In my Patrol zd30 I use Halfords 5w40 fully syn especially for diesels, burns none between changes £37 per 5 litres

Kind regards

Russell.

For some reason I had 10w40 semi synthetic as the preferred choice of the 3.0. Possibly from this forum. Anyhoo, on Castrol gtx at the moment, have some vauxhall/gm semi synthetic oil for next change. Will then be onto the Asda oil. 5l of 10w40 semi synthetic is currently £11. £14 for 5w40 fully synthetic if that's your bag. Been running the Picasso on the latter for ages.

Bizarrely, the truck has started using a bit of oil. About 1/2L a month. Seems to have happened since the garage had it in for the MOT. Been towing a bit more too so dunno what the cause is.
