22 year old Maverick Passes MOT with no advisories.

Well put the Mav up for MOT this morning, passed first time with no advisories.

The car hadn't done that many miles since last MOT, and sometimes that can be an issue too.
If you don't use it.... you loose it.

Had to buy a replacement rear washer pump, it had seized through non use £6 for a new one.:doh

I did the usual checks, jack up each corner, check bearings, tyres, ball joints arb's etc
Check lights, wiper blades, graying seat belts, usual stuff they like to give advisories on lol.

We took her out on Sunday for a thrash... when starting there was a plume of smoke... it pulled like a snail, no get up and go... so wait till warm... red line it in each gear, well tried, didn't make it at first.. couldn't red line.... so a bit more thrashing... After a while it had loosened up a lot, but I still wasn't happy with it.
So yesterday, off to Toolstation and bought a bottle of diesel injector cleaner and put 25 litres of Shell diesel in with it... took her for a 50 mile hike, red lining in each gear, at the end of that session, she was running like a sewing machine.

This morning it started without any smoke at all, these engines are so forgiving.
It runs so smoothly now, slick gear changes, no hesitation, free to red line in the lower gears lol... It can do 80... and still wanted to go, so no point in pushing it lol.

So my Mav totally neglected for nearly 2 years, had oil and filter change and regular checks but left in a warm dry garage, a few short trips, but that's what screws her up, plus old diesel, been in the tank for 6+ months.

Well sitting back in the garage with a 12 month ticket, needs road tax and I'll treat her to a gear / transfer box oil change and antifreeze, and brake and clutch fluid now.

Wasn't worth over spending pre MOT lol I mean, I've spent £6 already getting her through this year lol...

So there you go. Written proof that my Mav is in better health than I am lol.

Did you tell the Salesman when you bought her it was a car for life purchase ?

Trust your first battery carried a lifetime ownership warrant ! lol

Our Jeep was 10 yers old when we bought her and it was unusual that it had no fails or advisories aginst it. The Trader used it as a selling point.

I know I'm tempting fate with this but I've got a Volvo V70 that I've had from new in 2002 and it's still on the original battery 115000 miles later.

Well done Rustic, my T2 went straight through its mot before Christmas with only 2 bulbs replaced in the previous year. Had an advisory on brake pads so I changed those and the rotors too, which were just past their wear limit.

Had a few minor ones, ironically a chip on the windscreen about 10 years ago, but not mentioned since, and it's the same screen lol. :nenau

Re lifetime guarantee, a friend of mine bought a Rolex watch with a lifetime guarantee, unfortunately when it did break.... it slashed his wrist lol...:lol:lol

Re battery, the current one I had replaced under Warranty after 3 years use, I wrote it up on here how I went about it.

With non use the battery takes a hit, but I have an intellegent charger that I can leave on as long as required.

i've had jump leads in all my cars, and the only time I have ever used them is to help others.

Well... not exactly true, and since someone talked about my first Maverick battery...
When my Mav was just over 8 months old, it was approaching winter, it was sluggish to start and on one frosty day, and I can say with all honesty, in all of 22 years of ownership, it actually failed to start just that once.
We jump started it off the fiesta... A 4x4 jump started off a fiesta, how embarrassing was that. People were actually walking and driving past, I held my head in shame. The only way it could possibly be worse... if I jump started it off a Land Rover.

I gave the same story to the Ford dealer in Cannock, he said bring her in... we can't have that, Ford Maverick jump started by a Ford Fiesta... This was the first model that Ford supplied that had a three year warranty, passed on from Nissan.
They never tested the battery, they checked the charging voltage and put a brand new battery on, no further questions asked. Problem solved.

The Ford dealer at Cannock, Churchbridge motors, is no longer there, in fact it was bull dosed to make way for the M6 toll road, and if you ever use the toll road, going north, when you are at the main toll booth, you are sitting over the Ford dealer's site.

So why did I choose a Ford Maverick over a Nissan Terrano ?
They came out of the same factory, built side by side. Priced about the same.

There was a little bit of "badge engineering" taking place, I preferred the Ford badge at the time.:augie
I test drive both of course, and at the time I preferred the plain drab John Major style grey interior to the slightly colourful Nissan interior.
This was my midlife chrisis year, The year I was 40... if I want a 4x4 this was the year, it had to tow a 2 tonne boat, so trailer next on the agenda.
I had already test driven the Vauxhall Frontera, and looked at the sport trak and even test drove... this is really embarrassing... I actually test drove a Land Rover Discovery:doh:doh Actually it did the drive without breaking down, well during the test drive another Discovery driver flagged me down having seen the trade plates, he said this was his third one...hmmm I thought... must be pleased with them to have owned three... I was now getting impressed.

No this was not the case... he has had three because the first two were returned to the factory, both had left him stranded, both had gear box failures and excessive oil leaks, he feels as though he should stay with the brand as they have been very helpful.... S@d that... I'd want my money back...

So left on the list was... oh just one car, my Ford Maverick.

One of the best choices we have made, and my wife loves to drive it still.
I love parking it on the well lit underground car park at Tesco in Lichfield on a winter's night, bodywork shining, it still looks like it just came out of the showroom. In a way it did... stored in a warm dry garage for most of it's years.
