I've been in a few peoples car recently, most of them Turbo Diesel including a few Transit Vans and whilst in motion, it is evident that a turbo is present as I can hear it spooling and whistling, not very loud but can certainly hear that it's there

I cannot however hear this in the Mav and wondered if this was anything to worry about or if these motors were just like that?

Cheers Guys

Take the air filter out (only temporary) or fit a K&N and then you will hear it:doh

The air intake on these in in the nearside front wing, so softens the sound.

When I fitted a boost gauge, I could hear the turbo through the connecting pipe, so I put a restriction in the line, under the bonnet, silent again without really affecting the boost gauge.

Most modern turbo diesels now use a VNT or variable nozzle turbo, the 2.7 Nissan does not. It is likely the noise you can hear is from the control vanes in the VNT and not the turbine.

Thanks for that reply, I must admit, I had wondered the same thing, we borrowed a Renault Traffic, and you could clearly hear the Turbo workings while driving that, but never a peep out of the T2, although, with hind sight, before I changed mine, I now know I could hear the rumble from the knackered bearings...

Mind you, with the front exhaust section dodgy on the T1, we can hear a turbo whistle on that at the moment. :augie

Glad it's not just me :) thanks for the replies guys :)

12 Years with the same 2.7 Tdi, I could hear the just audible high pitched whine as the turbo came in.

Now I have a 3.0 I was going to ask if you are supposed to hear it or has my turbo packed up :(

if you can hear it it usually means your exhaust flexi is going!

I love turbo sound, our Vauxhall, you can hear it when pulling away as it's low pressure, the terrano Is high pressure

I just got a cheapy but branded pipercross cone, I can now hear my turbo spool lovely in every gear, and you can hear it holding , so get yourself on fleabay, im just a bit concerned about these cheap type filters, next for a manual boost controller :)

Pipercross is fine. Except I guess you've got it in the engine bay. Keep away from deep water
